Oilcrops Consumption by Country

China held 20,432 thousand tonnes of listed oilcrops food supply in 2023, 27.0 percent of a 75,680-thousand-tonne total shared with India at nearly half between them. The single year brought a sharp split: China and India each added more than 1,000 thousand tonnes while Türkiye fell 57.6 percent. The per-capita ranking looks nothing like the volume table, with nine of the ten highest figures belonging to Pacific island nations led by Kiribati at 285.52 kilograms per person per year.

Oilcrops Consumption

China leads at 20,432 thousand tonnes, 1.35 times India at 15,136, with Indonesia third at 7,704 and Brazil fourth at 3,161. Per capita the scale reverses: Kiribati at 285.52 kilograms from 38 thousand tonnes, then Micronesia at 243.64 and the Marshall Islands at 231.11 kilograms. China, first by total, records 14.36 kilograms per person.

Oilcrops Food Supply at a Glance

  • China had the largest listed oilcrops food supply in 2023 at 20,432 thousand tonnes.
  • India ranked second at 15,136 thousand tonnes, followed by Indonesia at 7,704 thousand tonnes.
  • Kiribati had the highest per-capita food supply at 285.52 kilograms per person per year.
  • The listed total was 75,680 thousand tonnes across 176 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed oilcrops food supply increased by 4,934 thousand tonnes, or 7.0 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

The oilcrops aggregate covers the oilcrop items in the FAO Food Balances classification, including soyabeans, groundnuts, sunflower seed, rape and mustard seed, cottonseed, coconuts, sesame seed, palm kernels, olives and other oilcrops. Coconut supply shapes the per-capita table: island nations with tiny totals reach very high per-person figures.

China and India carried both windows, together contributing 63.6 percent of the five-year net gain and both adding more than 1,000 thousand tonnes in the single year. The counterweight came from steep falls in Türkiye, Thailand and Egypt, each losing more than 45 percent in one of the two windows.

China and India Hold Nearly Half the Oilcrops Total

The 2023 table is led by China at 20,432 thousand tonnes, with India second at 15,136 and Indonesia third at 7,704. Brazil and Nigeria complete the top five at 3,161 and 2,840 thousand tonnes, respectively. China holds 27.0 percent of the 75,680-thousand-tonne listed total, and the two leaders together hold 47.0 percent.

The top three reporters accounted for 57.2 percent of the listed total, the top five 65.1 percent and the top ten 75.3 percent. Per capita, nine of the ten highest figures belong to Pacific island nations, the exception being Comoros in the Indian Ocean at 96.31 kilograms. Kiribati's 285.52 kilograms per person leads a ranking where every entry above 130 kilograms comes from a reporter with fewer than 70 thousand tonnes of listed supply.

Türkiye Falls 57.6 Percent as China and India Carry a 1.7 Percent Annual Rise

Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 74,423 thousand tonnes to 75,680 thousand tonnes, a gain of 1,257 thousand tonnes (1.7 percent). The two years share the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China added 1,408 thousand tonnes (up 7.4 percent), India added 1,068 thousand tonnes (up 7.6 percent), South Korea added 202 thousand tonnes (up 34.9 percent), the United States added 193 thousand tonnes (up 8.0 percent) and the Philippines added 174 thousand tonnes (up 19.1 percent), while Türkiye fell 882 thousand tonnes (down 57.6 percent), Indonesia fell 416 thousand tonnes (down 5.1 percent) and Tanzania fell 207 thousand tonnes (down 23.9 percent).

China and India together added 2,476 thousand tonnes against a net gain of 1,257, so the 1.7 percent rise is the remainder after Türkiye's collapse and Indonesia's decline absorbed roughly half of the two leaders' combined increase.

China Supplies 43.7 Percent of a 7.0 Percent Five-Year Gain

For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 70,746 thousand tonnes to 75,680 thousand tonnes, a gain of 4,934 thousand tonnes (7.0 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 48 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. China added 2,154 thousand tonnes (up 11.8 percent), India added 983 thousand tonnes (up 6.9 percent), Brazil added 503 thousand tonnes (up 18.9 percent), Nigeria added 345 thousand tonnes (up 13.8 percent) and South Korea added 191 thousand tonnes (up 32.4 percent), while Thailand fell 401 thousand tonnes (down 59.5 percent), Egypt fell 378 thousand tonnes (down 45.9 percent) and Sri Lanka fell 242 thousand tonnes (down 17.6 percent).

China contributes 43.7 percent of the five-year net increase and India 19.9 percent, so the two together account for 63.6 percent. Thailand fell from 674 to 273 thousand tonnes (down 59.5 percent) and Egypt from 823 to 445 (down 45.9 percent), declines that each exceed the entire contribution of most mid-sized gainers.

What Does the Oilcrops Food Supply Measure?

The numbers in this article come from the Oilcrops item in the FAO Food Balances, measured under the Food element as food available for human consumption during the reference year. The combined total should not be mistaken for an estimate of what people actually ate. The aggregate sums the oilcrop items in the FAO classification, including soyabeans, groundnuts, sunflower seed, rape and mustard seed, cottonseed, coconuts, sesame seed, palm kernels, olives and other oilcrops, and several of those items are also covered in separate articles.

The per-capita measure converts the reported food supply into kilograms available per person during the year. It offers a population-adjusted view of the same item, which is why oilcrops look concentrated in large Asian reporters by total but in small island nations per person.

India ranked second at 15,136 thousand tonnes, while Indonesia ranked third at 7,704 thousand tonnes. Kiribati had the highest per-capita oilcrops food supply at 285.52 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of oilcrops actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Oilcrops from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual dietary intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities are shown in thousand tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 75,680 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value. This article covers the oilcrops aggregate; individual oilseed items are treated in separate articles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Türkiye's oilcrops supply fall 57.6 percent in one year?

The FAO Food Balances data show Türkiye at 1,532 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 650 thousand tonnes in 2023. The 882-thousand-tonne decrease was a 57.6 percent decline between the two years. The figures show the size of the fall, but they do not identify what caused it.

Why are Pacific island nations at the top of the per-capita ranking?

Nine of the ten highest per-capita figures belong to Pacific island nations, led by Kiribati at 285.52 kilograms per person per year from only 38 thousand tonnes of listed supply. Coconut food supply raises per-person figures in countries with small populations, even where total quantities are modest.

Is the food supply of oilcrops the same as oilcrops eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
