Ethiopia First Twice at 88.9 Percent

Ethiopia opens the 2023 table at 5,851,476 tonnes (88.9 percent of 6,583,867), the United States at 210,792 and Poland at 78,289. The Netherlands and Italy come next at 71,593 and 37,703 tonnes.

The top three reporters accounted for 93.3 percent of the listed total, the top five 94.9 percent and the top ten 97.3 percent. Per capita, Ethiopia's 124.57 grams per person per day leads Liberia at 13.70 grams.

Up 3.2 Percent From 2022 to 2023

Across the 124 reporters with values in both 2022 and 2023, listed supply moved from 6,379,971 tonnes to 6,583,677 tonnes, up 203,706 tonnes or 3.2 percent. The two years share the same 124 reporters; Denmark entered at 190 tonnes and Jamaica, with 2 tonnes in 2022, has no 2023 value. Ethiopia added 141,246 tonnes (up 2.5 percent), Liberia 27,454 tonnes from 23 tonnes, Yemen 23,911 tonnes from a reported zero, the Netherlands 20,583 (up 40.4 percent), Saudi Arabia 7,987 (up 287.8 percent) and Kazakhstan 6,366 (up 22.3 percent).

On the declining side, Italy fell 16,955 tonnes (down 31.0 percent) and Poland fell 13,809 tonnes (down 15.0 percent). Ethiopia's gain of 141,246 tonnes against a net increase of 203,706 leaves Liberia, Yemen and the Netherlands as the other meaningful movers.

Five Years Up 16.8 Percent on Ethiopia's Gain

For the 123 reporters with values in both 2019 and 2023, listed supply rose from 5,636,872 tonnes to 6,583,479 tonnes, up 946,607 tonnes or 16.8 percent. The 2019 universe holds 125 reporters with values against 125 in 2023; Cuba and Jamaica, with negligible 2019 values, have no 2023 value, while Comoros and Denmark entered with a combined 388 tonnes. Ethiopia added 763,968 tonnes (up 15.0 percent), the United States 66,283 (up 45.9 percent), Poland 56,299 (up 256.0 percent), Liberia 27,469 from 8 tonnes, Yemen 22,760 (up 1,977.4 percent) and Kazakhstan 21,644 (up 162.9 percent).

On the declining side, Italy fell 12,687 tonnes (down 25.2 percent) and Ukraine fell 11,802 tonnes (down 92.3 percent). Ethiopia contributes 80.7 percent of the five-year net increase, with the United States, Poland, Liberia and Yemen adding the next-largest shares.
