Other Fructose and Syrup Consumption by Country
FAO Supply Utilization Accounts record other fructose and syrup available for human consumption, in tonnes and in grams per person per day, from 2019 through 2023. The file covers 160 reporters; 157 of them carry a 2023 value, adding to a listed total of 7,582,069 tonnes. The United States holds nearly three-quarters of the 2023 supply — down in both windows — while South Korea tops the per-person list.
The United States reported the largest 2023 supply at 5,538,954 tonnes, while South Korea recorded the highest per-capita figure at 52.82 grams per person per day. The United States' 5,538,954 tonnes top the 2023 table at 73.1 percent of the listed total, 5.55 times South Korea's 997,616 in second. Mexico follows at 470,616 with Vietnam at 218,338; the top three hold 92.4 percent, the top five 95.9 percent and the top ten 97.5 percent. Romania, the Czech Republic, Canada, France, Croatia and Paraguay complete the ten. Per person, South Korea ranks first at 52.82 grams per day, ahead of the United States at 44.18 grams. The common total moved from 8,561,068 tonnes to 7,581,749, down 979,319 tonnes or 11.4 percent across 141 reporters. Mexico fell 596,460 tonnes (down 55.9 percent), 60.9 percent of the net decrease, with the United States down 452,175 (down 7.5 percent) and Argentina down 287,035 (down 98.1 percent); Vietnam added 196,086 (up 881.2 percent) and South Korea 151,642 (up 17.9 percent), while Indonesia fell 53,913 (down 88.5 percent) and France added 12,255 (up 135.8 percent), with Bulgaria adding 9,105 from zero. Two reporters left at zero; sixteen entered with 319 tonnes between them. The common total moved from 7,931,623 tonnes to 7,582,065, down 349,558 tonnes or 4.4 percent across 156 reporters. The United States fell 313,657 tonnes (down 5.4 percent) while South Korea added 137,368 (up 16.0 percent); Mexico fell 108,421 (down 18.7 percent) and Indonesia 47,179 (down 87.0 percent), with Argentina down 23,074 (down 80.9 percent) and Vietnam up 18,128 (up 9.1 percent); China fell 17,027 to zero while Canada fell 13,284 (down 31.7 percent). One reporter left at zero; one entered with 3 tonnes. The FAO item covers other fructose and syrup as classified by FAO — outside chemically pure fructose, which has its own article; the two are not added together here. Food supply quantity captures what was available for human consumption during the reference year. The gram-per-day figure spreads that availability across the population on a daily basis. The United States had the largest 2023 listed supply of other fructose and syrup at 5,538,954 tonnes, accounting for 73.1 percent of the listed total. South Korea had the highest per-capita figure at 52.82 grams per person per day. The 2023 listed total was 7,582,069 tonnes across 157 reporters, down 11.4 percent on a common-reporter basis since 2019. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten. One hundred sixty reporters, each with a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023, compose the universe; the tables show reporters only, with World, regional and China (aggregate) rows set aside and China standing for the China reporter. The earlier endpoint year bases all percentages across reporters present in both years. Zero-base years yield no percentage, and small-base percentages should be read with the base alongside. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity in both measures — element 5141 in tonnes for totals, element 665 in grams per capita per day — covers other fructose and syrup over 2019-2023. Supply available for human consumption in the reference year is the measured object, not intake. A reported zero is treated as zero, while a blank value indicates that no value was reported. The 2023 listed total of 7,582,069 tonnes sums the 157 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published. Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the table shrink 11.4 percent?
Mexico fell 596,460 tonnes with the United States down 452,175 and Argentina down 287,035, against gains led by Vietnam's 196,086 and South Korea's 151,642. The figures record each move without attributing causes.
How do the top two swap lists?
The United States reported 5,538,954 tonnes against 44.18 grams a day while South Korea reported 997,616 against 52.82 — first and second by volume, second and first per person. The per-capita figure expresses the reported food supply relative to population on a daily basis.
What appeared then vanished?
China reported 17,027 tonnes in 2022 and zero in 2023. A zero is a reported zero, which differs from a blank cell meaning no report.
