Chemically Pure Fructose Consumption by Country
FAO Supply Utilization Accounts record fructose in chemically pure form available for human consumption, in tonnes and in grams per person per day, from 2019 through 2023. The file covers 89 reporters; 79 of them carry a 2023 value, adding to a listed total of 22,700 tonnes. Italy holds nearly half the 2023 supply without a 2019 value — in a table that shrank 34.7 percent on the exit of Paraguay.
Italy reported the largest 2023 supply at 11,080 tonnes, while Lithuania recorded the highest per-capita figure at 1.01 grams per person per day. The common total moved from 16,662 tonnes to 10,880, down 5,782 tonnes or 34.7 percent across 66 reporters. Italy, the 2023 leader at 11,080 tonnes, shows no 2019 value; Paraguay, at 4,421 tonnes in 2019, shows zero in 2023 — a fall of 100.0 percent worth 76.5 percent of the net decrease. Switzerland fell 746 tonnes (down 42.4 percent) while Vietnam added 582 (up 122.9 percent); New Zealand fell 355 (down 60.7 percent), South Africa 321 (down 16.5 percent) and Belarus 315 (down 67.7 percent), while the Philippines fell 182 (down 11.7 percent) and North Macedonia 148 (down 42.4 percent). Four reporters had a 2019 value but none in 2023, together accounting for 19 tonnes in 2019. Thirteen others had no 2019 value but reported 11,820 tonnes in 2023. Italy's 11,080 tonnes lead the 2023 table at 48.8 percent of the listed total, 5.27 times India's 2,103 in second. South Africa follows at 1,626 with the Philippines at 1,370; the top three hold 65.2 percent, the top five 75.9 percent and the top ten 91.8 percent. Vietnam, Lithuania, Switzerland, Finland, Jamaica and New Zealand complete the top ten. The common total moved from 23,513 tonnes to 22,700, down 813 tonnes or 3.5 percent across 79 reporters. China dropped out of the 2023 table after reporting 5,952 tonnes in 2022, with Panama's 0.07 going blank too; South Africa added 870 tonnes (up 114.9 percent) while Switzerland gave back 679 (down 40.1 percent) and India 621 (down 22.8 percent); Jamaica added 594.10 tonnes from a 0.01-tonne base, with New Zealand down 319 (down 58.1 percent), Italy down 245 (down 2.2 percent), Vietnam up 221 (up 26.5 percent) and the Philippines down 217 (down 13.7 percent). Lithuania's 1.01 grams per person per day is the highest figure in the per-capita table, from 1,047 tonnes, sixth by volume and first per person. Suriname follows at 0.61, with Jamaica at 0.57 from 594.11 tonnes, Italy at 0.51, Estonia at 0.36, Finland at 0.35, Switzerland at 0.31, North Macedonia at 0.3, New Zealand at 0.12 and Latvia at 0.1. The FAO item covers fructose in chemically pure form, the isolated sweetener as classified by FAO. Food supply quantity measures the amount available for human consumption during the reference year; it does not represent the amount people actually ate. The gram-per-person-per-day figure expresses the same reported supply on a daily per-capita basis. Italy recorded the largest 2023 listed supply of chemically pure fructose at 11,080 tonnes, while Lithuania had the highest per-capita figure at 1.01 grams per person per day. The 2023 listed total was 22,700 tonnes across 79 reporters. On a common-reporter basis, the total was 34.7 percent lower than in 2019. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten. Eighty-nine reporters with a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023 compose the file, and the tables show reporters alone: World, regional and China (aggregate) rows are out, with China standing for the China reporter. Percentages take the earlier endpoint year as base across reporters present in both years; zero-base years yield no percentage, and near-zero bases should be read with the base stated. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity in both measures — element 5141 in tonnes for totals, element 665 in grams per capita per day — covers chemically pure fructose over 2019-2023. Supply available for human consumption in the reference year is the measured object, not intake. Zero reports zero; blank reports nothing. The 2023 listed total of 22,700 tonnes sums the 79 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published. Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
How can the leader have no 2019 value?
Italy shows no 2019 value and 11,080 tonnes in 2023; a blank cell means no value was reported, which differs from a reported zero. The figures record the appearance, not what caused it.
What left the table in the latest year?
China's 5,952 tonnes and Panama's 0.07 went blank in 2023, while South Africa added 870 tonnes. The figures record each move without attributing causes.
Why is Jamaica's increase so large?
Jamaica rose from 0.01 tonnes in 2022 to 594.11 in 2023; from a near-zero base, the multiple is enormous while the tonnage stays modest. Small-base percentages should be read with the base in mind.
