The 2023 listed total was 220,866 thousand tonnes, with India second at 43,508 thousand tonnes and the United States third at 9,783 thousand tonnes. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.

Other Fruits Consumption

China leads the 2023 ranking at 61,062 thousand tonnes, 1.40 times India at 43,508 thousand tonnes. The Dominican Republic tops the per-capita ranking at 164.09 kilograms per person per year from 1,859 thousand tonnes, ahead of Antigua and Barbuda at 114.99 kilograms.

Other Fruits Food Supply at a Glance

  • China had the largest listed food supply of other fruits in 2023 at 61,062 thousand tonnes.
  • India ranked second at 43,508 thousand tonnes, followed by the United States at 9,783 thousand tonnes.
  • The Dominican Republic had the highest per-capita food supply at 164.09 kilograms per person per year.
  • The 2023 listed total was 220,866 thousand tonnes across 176 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed other fruits food supply increased by 19,450 thousand tonnes, or 9.7 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

China remained far ahead of the other reporters in 2023, with India and the United States forming a distant second tier. Indonesia and Mexico followed the top three, while the Dominican Republic stood out on a per-capita basis despite a much smaller total supply. The gap between total and per-capita rankings shows how population size substantially changes the picture when other fruits food supply is viewed on an individual basis.

Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 176 reporters with data in both years rose by 2,276 thousand tonnes, or 1.0 percent. China, Vietnam and Mexico accounted for the largest individual gains, while Italy, Nepal and Pakistan recorded notable declines. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 9.7 percent, with China contributing nearly half of the net increase. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of other fruits actually eaten.

China holds 27.6 percent of the 220,866-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 51.8 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 58.8 percent and the top ten 68.5 percent. Pakistan records 2,705 thousand tonnes in 2023 against 4,988 thousand tonnes in 2019.

China Adds 1,571 Thousand Tonnes as Supply Grows 1.0 Percent Between 2022 and 2023

Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 218,590 thousand tonnes to 220,866 thousand tonnes, a gain of 2,276 thousand tonnes (1.0 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China added 1,571 thousand tonnes (up 2.6 percent), Vietnam added 592 thousand tonnes (up 17.7 percent), Mexico added 500 thousand tonnes (up 9.0 percent), Iran added 409 thousand tonnes (up 9.6 percent) and Spain added 385 thousand tonnes (up 36.6 percent), while Italy fell 326 thousand tonnes (down 13.3 percent), Nepal fell 295 thousand tonnes (down 30.0 percent) and Pakistan fell 253 thousand tonnes (down 8.6 percent).

The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 740 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. China added 9,694 thousand tonnes (up 18.9 percent), the United States added 2,044 thousand tonnes (up 26.4 percent), Indonesia added 1,864 thousand tonnes (up 24.9 percent), Brazil added 1,121 thousand tonnes (up 26.5 percent), Vietnam added 883 thousand tonnes (up 28.9 percent), Mexico added 667 thousand tonnes (up 12.4 percent) and Colombia added 610 thousand tonnes (up 24.0 percent), while Pakistan fell 2,283 thousand tonnes (down 45.8 percent).

China contributes 49.8 percent of the five-year net increase, with Pakistan's 2,283-thousand-tonne fall the largest offset. Pakistan's two-window path runs 4,988 to 2,958 to 2,705 thousand tonnes. Per capita, the Dominican Republic's 164.09 kilograms from 1,859 thousand tonnes lead Antigua and Barbuda at 114.99 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 42.92 kilograms.

What Does the Other Fruits Food Supply Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Fruits, Other recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of fruit people actually ate. Fruits recorded under separate items sit outside this figure.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Other Fruits Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed food supply of other fruits among the 176 reporters with reported values, at 61,062 thousand tonnes. India ranked second at 43,508 thousand tonnes, while the United States ranked third at 9,783 thousand tonnes. The Dominican Republic had the highest per-capita other fruits food supply at 164.09 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of other fruits actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Fruits, Other from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 220,866 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much of the five-year increase comes from China?

China added 9,694 thousand tonnes between 2019 and 2023, or 49.8 percent of the 19,450-thousand-tonne net increase. Pakistan's 2,283-thousand-tonne decline was the largest offset in the window.

Why did Pakistan's other fruits food supply fall 45.8 percent since 2019?

The FAO Food Balances data show Pakistan at 4,988 thousand tonnes in 2019, down to 2,958 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 2,705 thousand tonnes in 2023. This dataset alone does not establish the cause of the decline.

Is the food supply of other fruits the same as fruit eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
