Other Marine Fish Consumption by Country
In 2023, China held 2,541 thousand tonnes of listed other marine fish food supply, 35.0 percent of a 7,266-thousand-tonne total spread across 168 reporters. All 168 reporters with reported 2023 quantities show the same listed quantity as in 2022, leaving the total quantity unchanged; per-capita values, however, differ for 93 reporters because they are population-adjusted. The five-year quantity comparison shows where the changes occurred instead, with Indonesia falling 991 thousand tonnes against a net decline of 622. Tuvalu recorded the highest per-capita figure at 30.35 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.
China leads at 2,541 thousand tonnes, 2.93 times Vietnam at 866. Per capita the order belongs to small island reporters: Tuvalu at 30.35 kilograms per person per year, then Antigua and Barbuda at 24.67 and Micronesia at 19.40 kilograms. China records 1.79 kilograms per person. The 2022-2023 comparison is unusual because all 168 reporters with reported 2023 quantities show identical quantity figures in both years. The five-year quantity comparison is where the table shows measurable movement: Indonesia fell 991 thousand tonnes (down 80.4 percent) while China added 235 thousand tonnes and India 220 thousand tonnes, leaving a net decline of 622 thousand tonnes. Vietnam, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Indonesia follow China within a band from 241 to 866 thousand tonnes. Iran fell from 35 to 1 thousand tonnes (down 97.1 percent) and South Korea from 40 to 9 thousand tonnes (down 77.5 percent). These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of other marine fish actually eaten. The 2023 table is led by China at 2,541 thousand tonnes, with Vietnam second at 866 and India third at 480. Myanmar and Bangladesh complete the top five at 358 and 296 thousand tonnes, respectively. China holds 35.0 percent of the 7,266-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 53.5 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 62.5 percent and the top ten 77.7 percent. Because every 2023 quantity repeats 2022, this ranking describes both years at once. Among the 168 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed quantity stands at 7,266 thousand tonnes in both years, a change of zero. The same 168 reporters are present at both endpoints, and every reporter has the same quantity in both years. Per-capita values are not identical, however, because they are calculated on a population basis. The analysis below therefore focuses on the 2019 to 2023 quantity comparison, where values genuinely differ. For the 168 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply fell from 7,888 thousand tonnes to 7,266 thousand tonnes, a decline of 622 thousand tonnes (7.9 percent). The 2019 total includes 169 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 168; Cuba, with 4 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. Indonesia fell 991 thousand tonnes (down 80.4 percent), Iran fell 34 thousand tonnes (down 97.1 percent) and South Korea fell 31 thousand tonnes (down 77.5 percent), while China added 235 thousand tonnes (up 10.2 percent), India added 220 thousand tonnes (up 84.6 percent), Vietnam added 43 thousand tonnes (up 5.2 percent), Ivory Coast added 30 thousand tonnes (up 34.9 percent) and Peru added 30 thousand tonnes (up 35.7 percent). Indonesia's decline was larger than the net decrease, with gains in China, India and Vietnam offsetting part of the loss. Per capita, Tuvalu's 30.35 kilograms lead Antigua and Barbuda at 24.67 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 1.79 kilograms. For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Marine Fish, Other recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of other marine fish people actually ate. Freshwater, demersal and pelagic fish recorded under separate items sit outside this figure. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed other marine fish food supply among the 168 reporters with reported values, at 2,541 thousand tonnes. Vietnam ranked second at 866 thousand tonnes, while India ranked third at 480 thousand tonnes. Tuvalu had the highest per-capita other marine fish food supply at 30.35 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of other marine fish actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Marine Fish, Other from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The 2022 and 2023 quantity values are identical for every reporter with reported data in both years. The reporter universe for this item contains 169 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 7,266 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 168 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Other Marine Fish Food Supply at a Glance

Other Marine Fish Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is there no measured quantity change in this table?
Every reporter with a 2023 quantity shows the identical 2022 quantity, so the 2022 and 2023 listed quantity totals match exactly at 7,266 thousand tonnes. Per-capita values differ for 93 reporters because they are population-adjusted.
Which reporter dominates the five-year decline?
Indonesia fell 991 thousand tonnes (down 80.4 percent) between 2019 and 2023, exceeding the 622-thousand-tonne net decline. China, India and Vietnam added a combined 498 thousand tonnes as the largest offsets.
Is the food supply of other marine fish the same as fish eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
Data Disclaimer: Projected data (future years) are estimates based on mathematical models. Actual values may differ. Learn about our methodology →
