Key Takeaways

In 2023, India led listed other pulses food supply at 15,422 thousand tonnes, with Nigeria second at 2,726 thousand tonnes and Ethiopia third at 2,029 thousand tonnes. Niger followed at 1,323 thousand tonnes and China at 1,243 thousand tonnes. Niger's 50.57 kilograms per person per year lead the per-capita ranking, followed by Burkina Faso at 32.59 kilograms.

Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 174 reporters with data in both years eased from 34,427 thousand tonnes to 34,184 thousand tonnes, a decline of 243 thousand tonnes (0.7 percent), as India's 758-thousand-tonne fall outweighed gains in Pakistan, Niger, Nigeria and Türkiye. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 11.0 percent, with India contributing 48.2 percent of the increase alongside Nigeria, Ethiopia and Niger. For the 174 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 30,794 thousand tonnes to 34,184 thousand tonnes, a gain of 3,390 thousand tonnes (11.0 percent). The 2019 total includes 175 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 174; Cuba, with 72 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. India added 1,634 thousand tonnes (up 11.9 percent), Nigeria added 528 thousand tonnes (up 24.0 percent), Ethiopia added 340 thousand tonnes (up 20.1 percent), Niger added 335 thousand tonnes (up 33.9 percent), Bangladesh added 246 thousand tonnes (up 25.8 percent) and Australia added 163 thousand tonnes (up 708.7 percent), while Canada fell 273 thousand tonnes (down 96.8 percent) and Myanmar fell 239 thousand tonnes (down 42.1 percent).

The five-year growth is shared more widely than the ranking suggests: India contributes 48.2 percent of the net increase, with Nigeria, Ethiopia and Niger adding a combined 1,203 thousand tonnes. Canada's fall from 282 to 9 thousand tonnes is the sharpest decline in the table. Per capita, Niger's 50.57 kilograms from 1,323 thousand tonnes lead Burkina Faso at 32.59 kilograms, while India, first by total, records 10.72 kilograms.

What Does Other Pulses Consumption Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the Pulses, other category used here is a grouped category covering pulses outside the separate beans and peas categories, including items such as broad beans, chickpeas, cow peas, pigeon peas and lentils. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of how much of these products people actually consumed.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Quick Answer

In 2023, India had the largest listed other pulses food supply among the 174 reporters with reported values, at 15,422 thousand tonnes. Nigeria ranked second at 2,726 thousand tonnes, while Ethiopia ranked third at 2,029 thousand tonnes. Niger had the highest per-capita other pulses food supply at 50.57 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of pulses actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Pulses, Other and products from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe contains 175 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 34,184 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 174 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are other pulses in this table?

The table covers pulses outside beans and peas, such as chickpeas, lentils and cow peas. Each is recorded under the FAO Food element in thousand tonnes.

Why did Canada's other pulses food supply decline since 2019?

Canada fell from 282 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 9 thousand tonnes in 2023, a decrease of 273 thousand tonnes (down 96.8 percent). It was the largest five-year decline among reporters in the table.

Is other pulses food supply the same as pulses eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
