Other Pulses n.e.c. Consumption by Country
Bangladesh recorded the largest five-year increase in listed other-pulses supply, adding 256,544 tonnes between 2019 and 2023. That increase was larger than the 94,742-tonne net gain across reporters because Mozambique and several other countries recorded declines. The 2023 total reached 2,189,182 tonnes across 136 reporters, led by India with 641,286 tonnes. The total was 3.0 percent higher than in 2022. Comoros had the highest per-person figure at 30.28 grams a day.
India's 2023 other-pulses figure of 641,286 tonnes stands 1.74 times Bangladesh's 368,108, with Vietnam third at 151,785. Comoros's 30.28 grams a day head the per-person order, ahead of Sierra Leone at 21.46 and the Solomon Islands at 20.06. 641,286 tonnes for India, 368,108 for Bangladesh, 151,785 for Vietnam — then 79,800 for Ethiopia and 69,212 for Nepal. India's 29.3 percent share leaves 53.0 percent for the top three combined, 59.8 for the top five and 73.2 for the top ten. Comoros ranked first on the per-person measure despite having only 9,398 tonnes, well below the volume of the top ten reporters. Among the 135 reporters with values in both years, the combined figure rose from 2,094,439 tonnes in 2019 to 2,189,182 in 2023. — a 94,742-tonne, 4.5 percent advance. Cuba had 71,049 tonnes in 2019 but no listed value in 2023, while Costa Rica also had no 2023 value. Bangladesh put on 256,544 tonnes (230.0 percent up), 270.8 percent of the net advance, while Mozambique came off 139,575 (78.1 percent down); Afghanistan came off 50,145 (72.6 percent down) and Malaysia put on 48,137 from 2,357 tonnes, with Thailand off 38,152 (35.9 percent down), Kenya on 37,448 from 2,790 tonnes, DR Congo off 33,701 to zero and Vietnam on 33,235 (28.0 percent up). One hundred thirty-six reporters bridge 2022 and 2023: 2,125,556 tonnes became 2,189,182 — a 63,626-tonne, 3.0 percent advance, with nobody entering or leaving. Mozambique put on 23,291 tonnes (146.4 percent up) and Thailand 17,182 (33.7 percent up), with Afghanistan on 15,500 (455.9 percent up); Pakistan came off 15,453 (21.2 percent down) and India put on 14,257 (2.3 percent up), while Tanzania came off 12,533 (32.7 percent down), Bangladesh on 10,337 (2.9 percent up) and Ethiopia on 9,115 (12.9 percent up). Pulses n.e.c. is a separate FAO item, distinct from the named pulse categories. A separate article follows the broader Other pulses aggregate from Food Balances; the two series are not added together here. The figures represent food available for human consumption in the reference year; the daily grams-per-person measure expresses that supply on a population-adjusted basis. India recorded the largest 2023 listed supply of other pulses at 641,286 tonnes, followed by Bangladesh at 368,108 tonnes and Vietnam at 151,785 tonnes. India's total represented 29.3 percent of the 2,189,182 tonnes reported across 136 reporters. Comoros had the highest per-person figure at 30.28 grams a day. These figures represent food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten. Every percentage compares two endpoint years across reporters holding values in both, with the earlier year as the base. Tonnes derive from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts element 5141 (food supply quantity); daily grams per person from element 665 — for pulses n.e.c., 2019 through 2023. Supply available for human consumption in the reference year is the measure, not intake. Zero-base years yield no percentage; a zero reports zero and a blank reports nothing. Reporter-only tables here — 138 held a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023 — omit World, regional and China (aggregate) rows; China is the China reporter. Tonnes follow FAO's publication, unrounded, and the 2023 listed total of 2,189,182 tonnes sums the 136 reporters with a 2023 value. Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
How did Bangladesh's increase compare with the net gain?
Bangladesh added 256,544 tonnes in 2019-2023 against a 94,742-tonne net increase — nearly three times the net gain, with Mozambique falling 139,575 the other way.
How did Mozambique fall then rebound?
Mozambique went from 178,780 tonnes in 2019 to 15,914 in 2022 and 39,205 in 2023. The long fall and the 146.4 percent rebound are traced in the figures without identifying what drove either.
Why does Comoros rank first per person?
Comoros's 9,398 tonnes work out to 30.28 grams a day per person, the highest shown, far below the volume of the top ten reporters.
