Pulses Consumption by Country

India held 22,137 thousand tonnes of listed pulses food supply in 2023, 37.2 percent of a 59,502-thousand-tonne total and 7.61 times the second-ranked reporter, yet second place itself was decided by 13 thousand tonnes between Ethiopia and China. The aggregate slipped 0.7 percent between 2022 and 2023 as Canada fell 90.3 percent and India and the United States declined, then stands 10.3 percent above its 2019 level on the strength of India, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Uganda. The per-capita leader is Niger at 50.67 kilograms per person per year, with Norway unexpectedly fifth at 21.17.

Pulses Consumption

India leads at 22,137 thousand tonnes, far ahead of Ethiopia at 2,909 and China at 2,896, with Nigeria fourth at 2,727 and Brazil fifth at 2,661. Per capita the order runs through West Africa: Niger at 50.67 kilograms from 1,326 thousand tonnes, then Burkina Faso at 32.70 and Rwanda at 31.53 kilograms. India, first by total, records 15.39 kilograms per person.

Pulses Food Supply at a Glance

  • India had the largest listed pulses food supply in 2023 at 22,137 thousand tonnes.
  • Ethiopia ranked second at 2,909 thousand tonnes, followed by China at 2,896 thousand tonnes.
  • Niger had the highest per-capita food supply at 50.67 kilograms per person per year.
  • The listed total was 59,502 thousand tonnes across 175 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 175 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed pulses food supply increased by 5,536 thousand tonnes, or 10.3 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

The combined pulses category covers the dried legume items in the FAO Food Balances classification, principally beans, peas and other pulses. One reporter dominates the volume picture while the rest of the table is compressed: the gap between second and tenth place is only about 1,635 thousand tonnes.

Canada's near-disappearance from the table is the sharpest single move in either window, falling 91.4 percent over five years. Uganda and Kazakhstan more than doubled over the five-year period, while Norway's presence among the top per-capita reporters stands apart from an otherwise African and South Asian ranking.

India Commands 37.2 Percent While Ethiopia Edges China for Second

The 2023 table is led by India at 22,137 thousand tonnes, with Ethiopia second at 2,909 and China third at 2,896. Nigeria and Brazil complete the top five at 2,727 and 2,661 thousand tonnes, respectively. India holds 37.2 percent of the 59,502-thousand-tonne listed total, and its supply is 7.61 times Ethiopia's.

The top three reporters accounted for 47.0 percent of the listed total, the top five 56.0 percent and the top ten 67.9 percent. The Ethiopia-China margin of 13 thousand tonnes is unusually thin for a second-place contest, and the per-capita contrast with the volume table is stark: Norway ranks fifth per person at 21.17 kilograms from only 117 thousand tonnes of listed supply.

A 0.7 Percent Annual Dip as Canada Falls 90.3 Percent

Among the 175 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply decreased from 59,896 thousand tonnes to 59,502 thousand tonnes, a decline of 394 thousand tonnes (0.7 percent). The two years share the same 175 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. India fell 991 thousand tonnes (down 4.3 percent), Canada fell 298 thousand tonnes (down 90.3 percent), the United States fell 279 thousand tonnes (down 17.1 percent) and Russia fell 254 thousand tonnes (down 50.9 percent), while Niger added 260 thousand tonnes (up 24.4 percent), China added 213 thousand tonnes (up 7.9 percent), Pakistan added 189 thousand tonnes (up 13.2 percent) and Nigeria added 183 thousand tonnes (up 7.2 percent).

Canada's drop from 330 to 32 thousand tonnes continues a longer collapse that the five-year window makes clearer. India's single-year decline alone exceeded the net change, so the modest headline figure conceals several large opposing moves.

Uganda and Kazakhstan More Than Double as the Five-Year Total Rises 10.3 Percent

For the 175 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 53,966 thousand tonnes to 59,502 thousand tonnes, a gain of 5,536 thousand tonnes (10.3 percent). The 2019 total includes 176 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 175; Cuba, with 208 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. India added 1,626 thousand tonnes (up 7.9 percent), Ethiopia added 540 thousand tonnes (up 22.8 percent), Nigeria added 527 thousand tonnes (up 24.0 percent), Uganda added 442 thousand tonnes (up 119.5 percent), Niger added 325 thousand tonnes (up 32.5 percent), China added 292 thousand tonnes (up 11.2 percent) and Kazakhstan added 262 thousand tonnes (up 206.3 percent), while Canada fell 340 thousand tonnes (down 91.4 percent).

India contributes 29.4 percent of the five-year net increase, Ethiopia 9.8 percent and Nigeria 9.5 percent. Uganda's rise from 370 to 812 thousand tonnes and Kazakhstan's from 127 to 389 thousand tonnes are particularly large proportional increases, while Canada's fall from 372 to 32 thousand tonnes removes almost the entire 2019 value.

What Does the Pulses Food Supply Measure?

The numbers in this article come from the Pulses item in the FAO Food Balances, measured under the Food element as food available for human consumption during the reference year. The combined total should not be mistaken for an estimate of what people actually ate. Beans, peas and the other dried pulses summed here sit together in one aggregate, and each of those items is also covered in a separate article.

The per-capita measure converts the reported food supply into kilograms available per person during the year. It offers a population-adjusted view of the same item, which is why small reporters such as Norway and Djibouti can rank near the top per person while sitting far down the volume table.

Pulses Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, India had the largest listed pulses food supply among the 175 reporters with reported values, at 22,137 thousand tonnes. Ethiopia ranked second at 2,909 thousand tonnes, while China ranked third at 2,896 thousand tonnes. Niger had the highest per-capita pulses food supply at 50.67 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of pulses actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Pulses from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual dietary intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 176 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities are shown in thousand tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 59,502 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 175 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value. This article covers the pulses aggregate; beans, peas and other pulses are treated in separate articles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did Canada's pulses food supply fall 91.4 percent over five years?

The FAO Food Balances data show Canada at 372 thousand tonnes in 2019 and 32 thousand tonnes in 2023, a decrease of 340 thousand tonnes. The figures show the size of the decline, but they do not identify what caused it.

Why is Norway among the top per-capita reporters for pulses?

Norway's listed pulses food supply was 117 thousand tonnes in 2023, modest in volume terms, but its per-capita figure reached 21.17 kilograms per person per year, fifth among the reporters shown. Total quantity and per-capita supply answer different questions.

Is the food supply of pulses the same as pulses eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
