FAO Supply Utilization Accounts record sugar and syrups not elsewhere classified available for human consumption, in tonnes and in grams per person per day, from 2019 through 2023. The file covers 172 reporters; 170 of them carry a 2023 value, adding to a listed total of 3,962,324 tonnes. China holds nearly two-thirds of the 2023 supply after adding 1.49 million tonnes in five years. These figures represent food available for human consumption, rather than the amount actually eaten by individuals.

China reported the largest 2023 supply at 2,495,395 tonnes, while Ireland recorded the highest per-capita figure at 30.09 grams per person per day.

Four Facts About the 2023 Supply

China Added 1,493,594 Tonnes in Five Years

The common total moved from 2,188,641 tonnes to 3,960,302, up 1,771,661 tonnes or 80.9 percent across 167 reporters. China added 1,493,594 tonnes (up 149.1 percent), 84.3 percent of the net increase, with the Netherlands adding 68,155 (up 2,718.6 percent), Australia 36,557 (up 1,343.5 percent), Indonesia 32,385 (up 12.8 percent), the United States 27,239 (up 84.8 percent), Vietnam 23,877 (up 246.6 percent) and Ireland 21,929 (up 62.4 percent); Germany fell 60,652 (down 68.7 percent). Two reporters left with 707 tonnes between them; three entered with 2,022.

China Holds 63.0 Percent; Ireland Tops per Person

China's 2,495,395 tonnes lead the 2023 table at 63.0 percent of the listed total, 8.73 times Indonesia's 285,864 in second. The Netherlands follows at 70,662 with South Africa at 69,727; the top three hold 72.0 percent, the top five 75.2 percent and the top ten 81.5 percent. The United States, South Korea, Ireland, Switzerland, Myanmar and Australia complete the ten. Per person, Ireland stands first at 30.09 grams — seventh by volume and first per person — with Switzerland at 14.6, the Netherlands at 10.7, Croatia at 8.56, New Zealand at 7.52, Estonia at 7.26, Slovenia at 6.76, Belgium at 5.7, Hong Kong at 5.25 and China at 4.81 behind.

2022 to 2023: Up 12.3 Percent

The common total rose from 3,529,283 tonnes to 3,962,324, up 433,041 tonnes or 12.3 percent across 170 reporters, with none entering or leaving. China added 318,752 tonnes (up 14.6 percent), with the Netherlands adding 39,388 (up 125.9 percent), Australia 37,975 (up 2,914.4 percent from 1,303 tonnes), South Korea 36,854 (up 165.1 percent), Indonesia 15,451 (up 5.7 percent) and Malaysia 15,346 (up 122.6 percent); Germany fell 34,549 (down 55.5 percent) and Venezuela 23,430 (down 83.3 percent).

One hundred seventy-two reporters holding a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023 form the universe; reporters alone fill the tables, with World, regional and China (aggregate) rows excluded and China standing for the China reporter. Percentages anchor on the earlier endpoint year for reporters present in both. Zero-base years produce no percentage, and small-base percentages should be read with the base stated.

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity, element 5141 in tonnes for totals and element 665 in grams per capita per day, tracks this residual item over 2019-2023. The counted quantity is availability for human consumption in the reference year, not intake. A reported zero is treated as zero, while a blank value indicates that no value was reported. The 2023 listed total of 3,962,324 tonnes sums the 170 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published.
