Packaged Tea Consumption by Country
China led the 2023 packaged tea food supply ranking with 3,541,100 tonnes, accounting for 51.0 percent of the annual listed food supply total. India followed at 1,327,500 tonnes and Kenya at 437,015, while Sri Lanka recorded the highest food supply per person at 33 grams per day. The 2023 figures total 6,945,347 tonnes across 119 countries, 118 with values, covering food available for human consumption from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023.
Matched countries inched 0.9 percent higher in the latest year, while the narrow 2019–2023 comparison rose 22.8 percent. China drove the latest gain as Kenya declined.
Key Findings
In 2023, China had the largest reported packaged tea food supply at 3,541,100 tonnes, accounting for 51.0 percent of the listed total. India ranked second at 1,327,500 tonnes and Kenya third at 437,015 tonnes. Sri Lanka ranked first by food supply per person at 33 grams per person per day, followed by Kenya at 22 grams and Türkiye at 9 grams. The 2023 listed total was 6,945,347 tonnes. These figures represent food available for human consumption in FAO Supply Utilization Accounts and do not measure actual tea drinking or individual intake.
Vietnam placed fourth at 282,150 tonnes, with Sri Lanka fifth at 272,732 and Türkiye sixth at 270,872. Indonesia, Bangladesh, Argentina and Uganda closed the top ten between 67,180 and 122,680 tonnes. The top three held 76.4 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 84.4 percent. China added 199,000 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 6.0 percent to 3,541,100 tonnes. Türkiye added 25,099 tonnes, up 10.2 percent. Sri Lanka added 21,233 tonnes, up 8.4 percent. Vietnam added 7,668 tonnes, up 2.8 percent. Kenya lost 97,985 tonnes, down 18.3 percent. India gave up 45,335 tonnes, down 3.3 percent. Argentina shed 8,300 tonnes, down 10.5 percent. Iran fell 8,186 tonnes, down 25.6 percent. The 118 countries present in both years inched from 6,886,679 tonnes to 6,945,347 tonnes, up 58,668 tonnes, or 0.9 percent, with no entries or exits. Between 2019 and 2023, only 30 countries appear in both years, growing from 3,300,346 tonnes to 4,051,333 tonnes, up 750,987 tonnes, or 22.8 percent. China added 763,900 tonnes, up 27.5 percent, accounting for 101.7 percent of that narrow gain. Sri Lanka lost 27,388 tonnes, down 9.1 percent. Pakistan added 8,952 tonnes, up 18.8 percent. Uganda added 6,843 tonnes, up 11.3 percent. Argentina added 5,942 tonnes, up 9.2 percent. Mozambique shed 5,412 tonnes, down 84.6 percent. Zimbabwe gave up 2,466 tonnes, down 16.2 percent. Laos added 1,577 tonnes, up 113.3 percent. One country left with 15 tonnes, while 88 countries with no reported 2019 value supplied 2,894,014 tonnes. Sri Lanka's 33 grams a day beat Kenya's 22 in second and Türkiye's 9 in third. Vietnam sat fourth at 8 grams, with China at 7 and Malawi at 6. Argentina, Uganda, India and Mauritius followed below five grams. China pairs first-place tonnage with fifth-place per-person supply. Green, black and partly fermented tea in immediate packings up to three kilograms, for human consumption, is counted in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. The 2019–2023 comparison uses only countries with reported values in both years, so it should not be interpreted as a change in the full 2023 reporting universe. The short window covers nearly everyone. Kenya, India and Türkiye have no reported 2019 values; they reported 437,015, 1,327,500 and 270,872 tonnes respectively in 2023. Mozambique's 84.6 percent five-year fall ends far above zero. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts record tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for packaged tea, short for green, black and partly fermented tea in immediate packings up to three kilograms, across 2019-2023. Percentages reference the earlier year, and no percentage is calculated when that base is zero. The universe embraces 119 countries after aggregates are excluded, 118 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons, which limits the long window to 30 countries. The 2023 listed total is the sum of every country with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
How large is Sri Lanka's per-person lead?
Sri Lanka clearly led packaged tea per person in 2023, far above Kenya at 22 grams with Türkiye next at 9 grams a day overall.
How concentrated is packaged tea supply?
Highly concentrated: China held 51.0 percent of the listed total in 2023, while the top three reached 76.4 percent and the top five 84.4 percent.
How much did China add lately?
China alone added 199,000 tonnes, up by 6.0 percent in the latest year, the biggest single latest-year gain recorded among all countries in the file.
Is this what people actually drank?
No. The figures represent food available for human consumption and do not measure how much tea people actually drank. They describe supply in the reference year rather than measured individual intake.
Which countries account for most of the 2023 total outside the common-country comparison?
Eighty-eight countries with no reported 2019 value supplied 2,894,014 tonnes in 2023, far exceeding the 750,987-tonne gain among the 30 countries with values in both years.
