Papayas Consumption by Country
India still rules papayas at 4,781,927 tonnes, 38.4 percent of the listed consumption total. Indonesia at 1,228,185 tonnes and the Dominican Republic at 1,154,723, while the Dominican Republic led per person at 279.19 grams. 2023 figures total 12,452,227 tonnes across 163 countries, 157 with values, covering food available for human consumption from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023.
The common-country total added 0.2 percent in the latest year and 2.4 percent between 2019 and 2023, with Indonesia recording the largest latest-year gain and India the largest five-year decline.
Brazil placed fourth at 873,101 tonnes, with Mexico fifth at 854,428 and Nigeria sixth at 791,381. China, the United States, DR Congo and Colombia closed the top ten between 163,133 and 496,484 tonnes. The top three held 57.5 percent of the annual listed consumption total, and the top five 71.4 percent. India had the highest listed food supply at 4,781,927 tonnes, while the Dominican Republic had the highest per-capita food supply at 279.19 grams per person. Indonesia added 150,836 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 14.0 percent to 1,228,185 tonnes. Colombia added 23,747 tonnes, up 17.0 percent. The United States added 13,519 tonnes, up 6.6 percent. China added 11,241 tonnes, up 2.3 percent. India lost 92,427 tonnes, down 1.9 percent. Mexico shed 40,679 tonnes, down 4.5 percent. Brazil gave up 38,158 tonnes, down 4.2 percent. Malaysia fell 12,163 tonnes, down 33.7 percent. The 154 countries present in both years inched from 12,429,712 tonnes to 12,452,080 tonnes, up 22,368 tonnes, or 0.2 percent, with three arrivals carrying 147 tonnes. Between 2019 and 2023, the 150 countries present in both years grew from 12,035,955 tonnes to 12,319,653 tonnes, up 283,698 tonnes, or 2.4 percent. India lost 752,410 tonnes, down 13.6 percent from 5,534,337. China added 474,205 tonnes from a small base of 22,279. Indonesia added 324,335 tonnes, up 35.9 percent. The Dominican Republic added 86,155 tonnes, up 8.1 percent. Venezuela added 51,356 tonnes, up 57.0 percent. The United States added 39,673 tonnes, up 22.3 percent. Colombia added 30,597 tonnes, up 23.1 percent, and Haiti 26,329 tonnes from almost nothing. Cuba stopped reporting after 170,432 tonnes in 2019, ninth that year, with five more departures carrying traces. Seven countries arrived with 132,574 tonnes, Vietnam holding 132,427 of it. The Dominican Republic's 279.19 grams a day beat Guyana's 204.23 in second and Samoa's 39.20 in third. Costa Rica followed at 27.15 grams, with Fiji at 18.18 and Mexico at 18.04. Djibouti, Venezuela, Taiwan and Indonesia sat below 15 grams. India, first by volume, missed the per-person top ten. Papayas for human consumption are counted in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. China's 2,128.5 percent five-year rate divides by 22,279 tonnes and means entry at scale. Haiti's 10,378.1 percent increase is driven by its very small 2019 base of 253.7 tonnes. Cuba's exit removed a ninth-place holder without a farewell value. India had the largest papaya food supply in 2023 at 4,781,927 tonnes, equal to 38.4 percent of the 12,452,227-tonne listed total. Indonesia ranked second with 1,228,185 tonnes, while the Dominican Republic ranked third by volume and first per person at 279.19 grams per person per day. Across the 157 countries with a reported 2023 value, the data measures food available for human consumption rather than the amount actually eaten. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts designate tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for papayas across 2019-2023. Percentages rest on the earlier year, and zero bases get no percentage. The universe counts 163 countries minus aggregates, 157 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints qualify for comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 12,452,227 tonnes is the sum of the 157 countries with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Who trails the Dominican Republic per person?
The Dominican Republic clearly led papayas per person in 2023, far above Guyana at 204.23 grams with Samoa next at 39.20 grams a day overall.
How Indian is the table?
Considerably Indian: India alone held 38.4 percent of the annual listed consumption total, and the top three together reached 57.5 percent of reported supply overall.
How much did Indonesia add lately?
Indonesia added 150,836 tonnes, up 14.0 percent in the latest year to 1,228,185 tonnes, the biggest single latest-year gain among all countries in the file.
Is this what people actually ate?
No. The figures measure food available for human consumption in the reference year, not actual intake, so eaten amounts stay below supply in every case.
What reshaped the five-year table?
India alone lost 752,410 tonnes while China alone added 474,205 from a small base, and Cuba quietly exited with 170,432 tonnes after ranking ninth in 2019.
