Pelagic Fish Consumption by Country

In 2023, Indonesia held 3,120 thousand tonnes of listed pelagic fish food supply, 14.4 percent of a 21,626-thousand-tonne total spread across 176 reporters. All 176 reporters with reported 2023 quantities show the same listed quantity as in 2022, leaving the total quantity unchanged; per-capita values, however, differ for 150 reporters because they are population-adjusted. The five-year quantity comparison shows where the changes occurred instead, with Indonesia adding 378 thousand tonnes against a net decline of 140. Maldives recorded the highest per-capita figure at 69.34 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.

Pelagic Fish Consumption

Indonesia leads at 3,120 thousand tonnes, 2.28 times the Philippines at 1,371. Per capita the order belongs to island states: Maldives at 69.34 kilograms from 36 thousand tonnes, then Kiribati at 51.10 and Iceland at 47.96 kilograms. Indonesia records 11.09 kilograms per person.

Pelagic Fish Food Supply at a Glance

  • Indonesia had the largest listed pelagic fish food supply in 2023 at 3,120 thousand tonnes.
  • The Philippines ranked second at 1,371 thousand tonnes, followed by the United States at 890 thousand tonnes.
  • Maldives had the highest per-capita food supply at 69.34 kilograms per person per year.
  • The listed total was 21,626 thousand tonnes across 176 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed pelagic fish food supply decreased by 140 thousand tonnes, or 0.6 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

The 2022-2023 comparison is unusual because all 176 reporters with reported 2023 quantities show identical quantity figures in both years. The five-year quantity comparison is where the table shows measurable movement: Indonesia added 378 thousand tonnes (up 13.8 percent) while Egypt fell 243 thousand tonnes (down 44.0 percent) and China added 137 thousand tonnes (up 33.6 percent), leaving a net decline of just 140 thousand tonnes.

No reporter reaches even 15 percent of the listed total, showing that the reported food supply is spread across a relatively broad group of reporters. The Philippines, the United States, Thailand and India follow Indonesia within a band from 798 to 1,371 thousand tonnes. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of pelagic fish actually eaten.

Pelagic Fish Consumption by Country in 2023

The 2023 table is led by Indonesia at 3,120 thousand tonnes, with the Philippines second at 1,371 and the United States third at 890. Thailand and India complete the top five at 810 and 798 thousand tonnes, respectively.

Indonesia holds 14.4 percent of the 21,626-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 24.9 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 32.3 percent and the top ten 46.8 percent. Because every 2023 quantity repeats 2022, this ranking describes both years at once.

No Measured Quantity Change Between 2022 and 2023: Every Reporter Repeats

Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed quantity stands at 21,626 thousand tonnes in both years, a change of zero. The same 176 reporters are present at both endpoints, and every reporter has the same quantity in both years. Per-capita values are not identical, however, because they are calculated on a population basis. The analysis below therefore focuses on the 2019 to 2023 quantity comparison, where values genuinely differ.

Indonesia Adds 378 Thousand Tonnes Against a Net Decline of 140 Thousand Tonnes Since 2019

For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply fell from 21,766 thousand tonnes to 21,626 thousand tonnes, a decline of 140 thousand tonnes (0.6 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 29 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. Indonesia added 378 thousand tonnes (up 13.8 percent), China added 137 thousand tonnes (up 33.6 percent) and the Philippines added 82 thousand tonnes (up 6.4 percent), while Egypt fell 243 thousand tonnes (down 44.0 percent), Russia fell 117 thousand tonnes (down 14.9 percent), Nigeria fell 112 thousand tonnes (down 18.9 percent), Spain fell 99 thousand tonnes (down 18.1 percent) and Sri Lanka fell 84 thousand tonnes (down 19.9 percent).

Indonesia's gain alone exceeds the net change nearly threefold in reverse, offset by combined declines across Egypt, Russia, Nigeria, Spain and Sri Lanka. Per capita, Maldives' 69.34 kilograms from 36 thousand tonnes lead Kiribati at 51.10 kilograms, while Indonesia, first by total, records 11.09 kilograms.

What Does the Pelagic Fish Food Supply Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Pelagic Fish recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of pelagic fish people actually ate. Freshwater and demersal fish recorded under separate items sit outside this figure.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Pelagic Fish Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, Indonesia had the largest listed pelagic fish food supply among the 176 reporters with reported values, at 3,120 thousand tonnes. The Philippines ranked second at 1,371 thousand tonnes, while the United States ranked third at 890 thousand tonnes. Maldives had the highest per-capita pelagic fish food supply at 69.34 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of pelagic fish actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Pelagic Fish from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The 2022 and 2023 quantity values are identical for every reporter with reported data in both years.

The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 21,626 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there no measured quantity change in this table?

Every reporter with a 2023 quantity shows the identical 2022 quantity, so the 2022 and 2023 listed quantity totals match exactly at 21,626 thousand tonnes. Per-capita values differ for 150 reporters because they are population-adjusted.

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
