Pigmeat Consumption by Country

In 2023, China held 59,977 thousand tonnes of listed pigmeat food supply, nearly half of a 121,223-thousand-tonne total spread across 173 reporters. Yet China also drove the short window, adding 2,704 thousand tonnes in the last year, while Russia, Canada, Chile, the Netherlands and Mexico added between 107 and 354 thousand tonnes each. Croatia recorded the highest per-capita figure at 61.06 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.

Pigmeat Consumption

China's 59,977 thousand tonnes stand 5.99 times above the United States at 10,006. Per capita the order belongs to Europe: Croatia at 61.06 kilograms from 238 thousand tonnes, then Montenegro at 58.97 and Denmark at 57.90 kilograms.

Pigmeat Food Supply at a Glance

  • China had the largest listed pigmeat food supply in 2023 at 59,977 thousand tonnes.
  • The United States ranked second at 10,006 thousand tonnes, followed by Russia at 4,617 thousand tonnes.
  • Croatia had the highest per-capita food supply at 61.06 kilograms per person per year.
  • The 2023 listed total was 121,223 thousand tonnes across 173 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 171 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed pigmeat food supply increased by 9,040 thousand tonnes, or 8.1 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

China alone outweighs the next nine reporters combined in the total food-supply ranking, while the per-capita ranking is led by Croatia, Montenegro and Denmark. The United States and Russia follow at 10,006 and 4,617 thousand tonnes, with Brazil and Vietnam close behind.

Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 173 reporters with data in both years rose by 2,755 thousand tonnes, or 2.3 percent. China, Russia, Canada, Chile, the Netherlands and Mexico accounted for most of the largest increases, while Indonesia and France recorded notable declines. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 8.1 percent, with China contributing 81.2 percent of the net increase. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of pigmeat actually eaten.

Pigmeat Consumption by Country in 2023

The 2023 table is led by China, whose listed food supply of pigmeat reached 59,977 thousand tonnes. The United States followed with 10,006 thousand tonnes and Russia with 4,617 thousand tonnes. Brazil and Vietnam completed the top five at 3,538 and 3,449 thousand tonnes, respectively.

Remove China and the table shrinks to 61,246 thousand tonnes, led by the United States at 10,006. The top three reporters accounted for 61.5 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 67.3 percent and the top ten 77.9 percent. Myanmar records just 320 thousand tonnes in 2023 against 1,060 thousand tonnes in 2019.

China Adds 2,704 Thousand Tonnes as Supply Grows 2.3 Percent Between 2022 and 2023

Among the 173 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 118,468 thousand tonnes to 121,223 thousand tonnes, a gain of 2,755 thousand tonnes (2.3 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 173 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China added 2,704 thousand tonnes (up 4.7 percent), Russia added 354 thousand tonnes (up 8.3 percent), Canada added 160 thousand tonnes (up 18.6 percent), Chile added 126 thousand tonnes (up 25.7 percent), the Netherlands added 118 thousand tonnes (up 21.6 percent) and Mexico added 107 thousand tonnes (up 3.8 percent), while Indonesia fell 112 thousand tonnes (down 41.5 percent) and France fell 108 thousand tonnes (down 5.0 percent).

China Adds 7,343 Thousand Tonnes as Supply Grows 8.1 Percent Since 2019

For the 171 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 112,183 thousand tonnes to 121,223 thousand tonnes, a gain of 9,040 thousand tonnes (8.1 percent). The 2019 total includes 173 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 173; Cuba and Kuwait, with a combined 257 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value, while Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates entered with reported zeros. China added 7,343 thousand tonnes (up 14.0 percent), Vietnam added 1,004 thousand tonnes (up 41.1 percent), Russia added 662 thousand tonnes (up 16.7 percent), Mexico added 521 thousand tonnes (up 21.8 percent), Brazil added 510 thousand tonnes (up 16.8 percent) and the Netherlands added 196 thousand tonnes (up 41.9 percent), while Myanmar fell 740 thousand tonnes (down 69.8 percent) and Germany fell 614 thousand tonnes (down 15.8 percent).

China contributes 81.2 percent of the five-year net increase, followed by Vietnam at 11.1 percent. The ex-China table would still have grown, just barely: 1,697 thousand tonnes on a 59,549-thousand-tonne base. Per capita, Croatia's 61.06 kilograms from 238 thousand tonnes lead Montenegro at 58.97 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 42.16 kilograms.

What Does the Pigmeat Food Supply Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Pigmeat recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of pigmeat people actually ate. Cuts and preparations recorded under separate detailed items sit outside this aggregate figure.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Pigmeat Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed pigmeat food supply among the 173 reporters with reported values, at 59,977 thousand tonnes. The United States ranked second at 10,006 thousand tonnes, while Russia ranked third at 4,617 thousand tonnes. Croatia had the highest per-capita pigmeat food supply at 61.06 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of pigmeat actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Pigmeat from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 175 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 121,223 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 173 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

How dominant is China in pigmeat food supply?

China recorded 59,977 thousand tonnes in 2023, or 49.5 percent of the 121,223-thousand-tonne total, at 5.99 times the United States. Without China, the table would total 61,246 thousand tonnes led by the United States at 10,006.

Why did Myanmar's pigmeat food supply fall 69.8 percent since 2019?

The FAO Food Balances data show Myanmar at 1,060 thousand tonnes in 2019 and 320 thousand tonnes in 2023, but this dataset alone does not establish the cause of the decline. The 740-thousand-tonne decrease was the largest five-year fall in relative terms among major reporters.

Is the food supply of pigmeat the same as pigmeat eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
