Pumpkins Squash and Gourds Consumption by Country

China accounted for 34.9 percent of the reported global food supply of pumpkins, squash and gourds in 2023, well ahead of the United States and Russia. Tonga ranked first in food supply per person, while Egypt recorded the largest annual decline among reporting countries. Poland's reported supply more than quadrupled between 2019 and 2023. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten.

Pumpkins, Squash and Gourds: Key Findings. China ranked first in food supply of pumpkins, squash and gourds in 2023, with 6,744,203 tonnes, or 34.9 percent of the listed total. The United States ranked second at 1,392,481 tonnes, followed by Russia at 1,153,206 tonnes. Tonga had the highest per-person food supply, at 482.17 grams per person per day. Across 157 countries with comparable data, the total increased by 195,568 tonnes from 2022 to 2023. These figures represent food available for human consumption, not actual intake.

China Leads Total Supply

China led at 6,744,203 tonnes, 4.84 times the United States at 1,392,481. Russia sat third at 1,153,206 tonnes, ahead of Bangladesh at 603,515 and Indonesia at 545,691. The top three held 48.1 percent of the 19,313,843-tonne total, and the top five 54.0 percent. Algeria, France, Egypt, Türkiye and Poland closed the top ten between 396,340 and 416,451 tonnes. Of 160 countries in the file, 158 carried a 2023 value.

Egypt Falls, Russia Rises

Across the 157 countries with reported values in both 2022 and 2023, supply grew 1.0 percent, from 19,118,275 tonnes, a gain of 195,568. Egypt recorded the largest decline, shedding 113,660 tonnes, down 21.9 percent. The United States shed 77,403 tonnes, down 5.3 percent. Russia added 76,621 tonnes, up 7.1 percent, while Algeria added 51,180 tonnes, up 14.0 percent. Sri Lanka added 44,413 tonnes, up 27.0 percent. Portugal added 40,106 tonnes, up 53.4 percent. Australia added 39,520 tonnes, up 39.6 percent. Morocco added 35,657 tonnes, up 16.1 percent. Gambia first reported 0.04 tonnes in 2023.

Poland Quadruples Over Five Years

Among the 148 countries with reported values in both 2019 and 2023, supply grew 8.0 percent, from 17,862,057 tonnes, a gain of 1,422,135. Poland added 299,673 tonnes, quadrupling from 96,667. Zimbabwe added 260,711 tonnes from a zero base, so no percentage is calculated for it. Pakistan added 138,973 tonnes, up 56.8 percent. Morocco added 120,634 tonnes, up 88.5 percent. Niger added 100,336 tonnes, up 56.9 percent. Indonesia added 87,888 tonnes, up 19.2 percent. France added 87,650 tonnes, up 27.4 percent. Türkiye added 70,864 tonnes, up 21.2 percent. Cuba and Ethiopia reported values in 2019 but not in 2023, while ten additional countries contributed 29,651 tonnes to the 2023 total.

Tonga Leads Per Person

Tonga ranked first in food supply per person, at 482.17 grams per person per day, followed by Guyana at 218.32 grams and Mauritius at 63.04 grams per day in the same listed table that year. Jamaica and Malawi followed at 52.75 and 50.78 grams, respectively. Rwanda recorded 48.49 grams per person per day, while Zimbabwe reached 43.71 grams. China led by total volume but recorded 12.99 grams per person per day, illustrating how total supply and per-person supply can produce very different rankings.

Methodology

For pumpkins, squash and gourds, tonnage follows FAO FAOSTAT element 5141 and daily grams per person follow element 665, covering 2019-2023. Changes include only countries with reported values in both comparison years. A reported zero is distinct from a blank value, and percentage changes are not calculated from a zero baseline. The dataset contains 160 country entries after World, regional and aggregate rows are excluded; 158 have reported values for 2023.
