Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts provide the underlying data: element 5141 for food supply quantity in tonnes and element 665 for food supply quantity in grams per capita per day. The dataset covers 61 countries, of which 59 have reported values for 2023. The 2023 total includes all countries with a reported value that year, whereas year-to-year and five-year comparisons use only countries with values at both endpoints. A reported zero is distinct from a blank entry, and percentage changes are not calculated from a zero baseline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does China lead in total supply while Cyprus leads per person?

China reported 929,673 tonnes, the largest national total, while Cyprus recorded 72.19 grams per person per day. Total supply and per-capita supply measure different things, so their rankings do not have to match.

Which countries supplied the most raw sheep milk in 2023?

China, Algeria and Romania ranked first, second and third, with 929,673, 518,801 and 430,979 tonnes, respectively, in the same listed country table that year.

Which country recorded the sharpest decline in 2023?

Türkiye's reported supply fell by 27,172 tonnes, from 216,974 tonnes in 2022 to 189,802 tonnes in 2023, the sharpest decline among the countries highlighted here.

How much did reported supply change over five years?

Across the 59 countries with values in both 2019 and 2023, the total increased by 130,167 tonnes, or 3.5 percent, over the five-year comparison period.

Does food supply equal the amount people consumed?

No. FAO's figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of how much people actually ate in the reference year in any listed country.
