Renewable Electricity by Country (% of Total Electricity Output)

Renewable electricity output measures the share of electricity generated from renewable sources, expressed as a percentage of total electricity output. Renewable sources include hydropower, wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass. A higher share typically reflects a cleaner electricity mix and greater reliance on sources that are replenished naturally. The dataset covers 204 countries and territories with values from 2016 to 2021, the most recent years available.

Methodology

The statistics are based on the World Bank World Development Indicators dataset, indicator EG.ELC.RNEW.ZS (Renewable electricity output, percent of total electricity output). The main comparison uses 2021 data, the most recent year available, covering 202 of the 204 countries and territories in our dataset. Earlier years are not substituted for missing 2021 values in the ranking. Values represent renewable electricity output as a share of total electricity output, expressed as a percentage. Missing observations are treated as missing, not as zero.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country generates the largest share of its electricity from renewable sources?

Bhutan generated 100 percent of its electricity from renewable sources in 2021, the highest share in the dataset, followed by Lesotho (99.8 percent) and Costa Rica (99.4 percent).

How many countries are included in the dataset?

Our dataset includes 204 countries and territories. Of these, 202 have data available for 2021, the most recent year in the dataset. Countries without a 2021 observation are not included in the ranking.

What counts as a renewable source?

Renewable sources include hydropower, wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass. The share is calculated as renewable electricity output divided by total electricity output.

Why is the latest year 2021 and not 2025?

The World Bank dataset used for this statistic does not include observations after 2021 for renewable electricity output. The ranking is therefore based on 2021, the most recent year available.

Are the figures adjusted for inflation?

No. The values are percentages and are not adjusted for inflation or any other factor. They represent the share of renewable sources in total electricity output for each year.
