Renewable Electricity by Country (% of Total Electricity Output)
Renewable electricity output measures the share of electricity generated from renewable sources, expressed as a percentage of total electricity output. Renewable sources include hydropower, wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass. A higher share typically reflects a cleaner electricity mix and greater reliance on sources that are replenished naturally. The dataset covers 204 countries and territories with values from 2016 to 2021, the most recent years available.
Bhutan generated 100 percent of its electricity from renewable sources in 2021, the highest share recorded in the dataset. Lesotho ranked second with 99.8 percent, followed by Costa Rica (99.4 percent) and Norway (99.1 percent). The Central African Republic (96.5 percent), El Salvador (95.6 percent), Namibia (93.4 percent), Tajikistan (93.4 percent), Andorra (93.3 percent), and Belize (92.9 percent) complete the top ten. Among the 202 countries with 2021 data, 60 generate at least 50 percent of their electricity from renewable sources, and 14 countries record a share of 90 percent or more. At the other end of the ranking, Bahrain, Brunei, Comoros, Libya, and Turkmenistan all recorded a renewable share of 0.0 percent in 2021. Saudi Arabia (0.1 percent), Qatar (0.3 percent), and Kuwait (0.3 percent) also record shares of 1 percent or less. Among major economies, Brazil (77.4 percent) and Canada (67.0 percent) record the highest shares, ahead of Spain (47.0 percent), Italy (41.0 percent), and Germany (39.8 percent). The United States (20.3 percent), Japan (21.1 percent), France (22.8 percent), and India (19.1 percent) all record shares near 20 percent, while China generates 28.4 percent of its electricity from renewable sources. In Asia, Bhutan (100 percent) leads, followed by Tajikistan (93.4 percent), Kyrgyzstan (85.6 percent), Nepal (84.0 percent), and Georgia (81.4 percent). Vietnam (41.2 percent), China (28.4 percent), Pakistan (28.3 percent), and Japan (21.1 percent) also record notable shares, while Cambodia (56.4 percent) and Laos (63.3 percent) record higher shares than the region's major economies. South Korea (6.6 percent) and Singapore (4.0 percent) record the lowest shares in Asia. In Africa, Lesotho (99.8 percent), Zambia (92.0 percent), and Angola (91.2 percent) are among the regional leaders, with Kenya (78.1 percent) and Uganda (90.0 percent) also high. At the other end, Tunisia (2.8 percent), South Africa (6.4 percent), Botswana (0.2 percent), and Algeria (0.9 percent) record the lowest shares. In Europe, Norway (99.1 percent) leads, followed by Luxembourg (89.0 percent) and Austria (79.9 percent). Denmark (79.0 percent), Sweden (67.4 percent), and Switzerland (67.9 percent) also record shares above 60 percent, while the Czech Republic (14.0 percent), Poland (17.5 percent), and Belgium (23.5 percent) record the lowest in Europe. In the Americas, Costa Rica (99.4 percent) leads, ahead of El Salvador (95.6 percent), Uruguay (84.4 percent), and Venezuela (81.7 percent). Brazil (77.4 percent), Colombia (75.1 percent), and Canada (67.0 percent) also record high shares, while the United States (20.3 percent) and Cuba (4.8 percent) record among the lowest in the region. In the Middle East, the lowest shares in the dataset are recorded, with Bahrain (0.0 percent), Saudi Arabia (0.1 percent), Qatar (0.3 percent), and Kuwait (0.3 percent) all at or below 0.3 percent, and Jordan (24.9 percent) the highest in the region. Djibouti recorded the largest increase in its renewable electricity share between 2020 and 2021, rising from 0.5 percent to 35.4 percent, an increase of 34.9 percentage points. Zimbabwe recorded the second largest increase at 30.0 percentage points (from 58.3 to 88.3 percent), followed by Guinea (61.8 to 88.1 percent, plus 26.3 points) and Sri Lanka (35.2 to 49.2 percent, plus 14.0 points). Colombia (65.3 to 75.1 percent, plus 9.8 points) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (29.5 to 39.3 percent, plus 9.8 points) also record increases above 9 percentage points. Uruguay recorded the largest decline in its renewable electricity share between 2020 and 2021, falling from 93.7 percent to 84.4 percent, a decrease of 9.4 percentage points. Burundi was the only other country with a decline of 9.0 percentage points or more, falling from 70.3 percent to 61.3 percent. Estonia (48.9 to 40.0 percent, minus 8.9 points), Afghanistan (87.1 to 78.2 percent, minus 8.9 points), and Madagascar (42.3 to 34.1 percent, minus 8.2 points) also recorded notable declines, while most other countries changed little from 2020 to 2021. The statistics are based on the World Bank World Development Indicators dataset, indicator EG.ELC.RNEW.ZS (Renewable electricity output, percent of total electricity output). The main comparison uses 2021 data, the most recent year available, covering 202 of the 204 countries and territories in our dataset. Earlier years are not substituted for missing 2021 values in the ranking. Values represent renewable electricity output as a share of total electricity output, expressed as a percentage. Missing observations are treated as missing, not as zero.Countries With the Highest Share of Renewable Electricity in 2021

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Which country generates the largest share of its electricity from renewable sources?
Bhutan generated 100 percent of its electricity from renewable sources in 2021, the highest share in the dataset, followed by Lesotho (99.8 percent) and Costa Rica (99.4 percent).
How many countries are included in the dataset?
Our dataset includes 204 countries and territories. Of these, 202 have data available for 2021, the most recent year in the dataset. Countries without a 2021 observation are not included in the ranking.
What counts as a renewable source?
Renewable sources include hydropower, wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass. The share is calculated as renewable electricity output divided by total electricity output.
Why is the latest year 2021 and not 2025?
The World Bank dataset used for this statistic does not include observations after 2021 for renewable electricity output. The ranking is therefore based on 2021, the most recent year available.
Are the figures adjusted for inflation?
No. The values are percentages and are not adjusted for inflation or any other factor. They represent the share of renewable sources in total electricity output for each year.
Data Disclaimer: Projected data (future years) are estimates based on mathematical models. Actual values may differ. Learn about our methodology →
