Rye Exports by Country
Poland lost more than two-fifths of its rye exports since 2020 and still accounts for nearly half of the reported total, even as the overall market contracted. The table below aggregates FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Rye, 2020-2024, pairing export quantity in tonnes with export value in current US dollars. It lists 70 countries; 51 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is about 1.53 million tonnes. Countries appear below ordered by 2024 listed quantity, from largest to smallest.
Poland was the largest rye exporter in the 2024 listed data with 754,828 tonnes, followed by Germany with 315,095 tonnes and Canada with 153,485 tonnes. Latvia ranked fourth with 118,957 tonnes, ahead of the Czech Republic (33,387 tonnes), Lithuania (24,406 tonnes), France (22,672 tonnes), Austria (17,425 tonnes), Ukraine (11,368 tonnes) and Hungary (9,718 tonnes). Poland also led on export value at 157,602,000 US dollars, followed by Germany (85,564,000) and Canada (48,060,000). Poland's 2020-2024 retreat of 538,671 tonnes accounts for about 78 percent of the common-universe decline of 689,327 tonnes: the leader's contraction accounts for most of the common-universe decline, which is why Poland still holds nearly half the market while its volume fell 41.6 percent. No other country's five-year change comes within 460,000 tonnes of Poland's in either direction. Poland holds 49.5 percent of the listed 2024 total, about 2.40 times Germany's share; the top three together hold 80.2 percent, the top five 90.2 percent and the top ten 95.8 percent. The ranking is European almost throughout, led by Poland, Germany, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, France, Austria, Hungary, Sweden (9,054 tonnes), Spain (8,846 tonnes), Slovakia (8,832 tonnes), Belgium (7,327 tonnes) and the Netherlands (6,382 tonnes), with Canada the lone large exporter outside Europe and Ukraine (11,368 tonnes) the only other reporter above 10,000 tonnes beyond the top eight. Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (42 countries with data in both years) rose from 1,438,602 tonnes to 1,525,567 tonnes, a change of 86,965 tonnes (6.0 percent). The totals listed for each year were 1,439,104 tonnes (49 reporters) and 1,525,603 tonnes (51 reporters), leaving only a 36-tonne difference between the 2024 common and listed totals. Poland added 74,409 tonnes (up 10.9 percent), Latvia 67,967 tonnes (up 133.3 percent) and Germany 42,757 tonnes (up 15.7 percent). Canada recorded the largest absolute retreat, down 75,760 tonnes (down 33.0 percent). The United Kingdom fell from 28,745 tonnes to 200.33 tonnes (down 99.3 percent), a reported near-zero flow rather than a reporting gap, while Estonia fell 12,490 tonnes (down 74.5 percent) and Kazakhstan 6,917 tonnes (from 7,503 to 586.2 tonnes, down 92.2 percent). Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (40 countries with data in both years) fell from 2,214,309 tonnes to 1,524,982 tonnes, a change of -689,327 tonnes (-31.1 percent). The totals listed for each year were 2,230,935 tonnes (50 reporters) and 1,525,603 tonnes (51 reporters); 10 countries reporting in 2020 (16,626 tonnes combined, led by Russia with 11,836 tonnes) did not report in 2024. Germany added 49,890 tonnes (up 18.8 percent), the largest absolute gain over the period. Latvia fell 73,597 tonnes (down 38.2 percent), Sweden 48,063 tonnes (down 84.1 percent) and Estonia 38,521 tonnes (down 90.0 percent). Yearly reporter totals in this table sum FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows for item Rye, export quantity and export value, 2020-2024. In this rye exports dataset, sub-1,000-tonne quantities use two decimals, larger quantities use whole tonnes, and values are full current US dollars without inflation adjustment. The 2024 rye exports ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities; values are not used for ranking. In the rye exports data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. Only countries reporting quantities in both compared years feed change arithmetic, and reporters that enter or leave are tallied on their own lines. Partner-derived gap filling and food-aid additions can apply, and unreconciled bilateral pairs mean an export entry and its mirror import may not match.Rye Exports by Country in 2024

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
How can Poland shrink 41.6 percent and still hold half the market?
Poland fell from 1,293,499 tonnes in 2020 to 754,828 tonnes in 2024 while the 40-country common universe fell 31.1 percent alongside it. When the leader is nearly half the market, its own decline drags the total down, leaving its share almost unchanged, a level-versus-share distinction rather than a contradiction.
Did the United Kingdom stop reporting rye exports?
No. The United Kingdom reported 28,745 tonnes for 2023 and 200.33 tonnes for 2024 (down 99.3 percent). Both are reported values, so this is a collapse in reported trade rather than a blank-cell reporting gap.
Why is Belgium's surge shown without a percentage?
Belgium moved from 162.83 tonnes in 2023 to 7,327 tonnes in 2024. A percentage off a 163-tonne base would run to four digits while describing about 7,164 tonnes, so the move is reported in absolute terms with its base shown.
What does this table not show?
It shows rye exports only, by reporter, in tonnes and US dollars. It does not show rye production, domestic consumption, stocks, imports or use, so an export ranking alone does not identify the largest producer or consumer.
