Rye Imports by Country
Denmark bought 7,589 tonnes of rye abroad in 2020 and 179,377 tonnes in 2024, climbing from the lower ranks of this table to fourth place in four years. The figures below aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records for item Rye, 2020-2024, pairing import quantity in tonnes with import value in current US dollars. The table lists 113 countries; 68 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 listed quantity total is about 1.73 million tonnes. The 2024 country list for rye imports runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.
Germany was the largest rye importer in the 2024 listed data with 560,273 tonnes, followed by the United States with 289,776 tonnes and Spain with 277,139 tonnes. Denmark ranked fourth with 179,377 tonnes, ahead of the Netherlands (147,038 tonnes), Kazakhstan (51,238 tonnes), Sweden (28,418 tonnes), Latvia (28,324 tonnes), Belgium (25,135 tonnes) and Italy (16,933 tonnes). Germany also led on import value at 123,007,000 US dollars, followed by the United States (91,991,000) and Spain (57,150,000). Denmark added 171,788 tonnes between 2020 and 2024, the largest absolute gain in the table in both the 2023-2024 and 2020-2024 comparisons, rising from 7,589 tonnes to 179,377 tonnes. That advance reshaped the middle of the ranking: Denmark now buys more than three-fifths as much as the United States, the second-placed importer. Germany holds 32.4 percent of the listed 2024 total, about 1.93 times the United States; the top three together hold 65.3 percent, the top five 84.2 percent and the top ten 92.9 percent. European buyers take about 78.7 percent of the listed total (1,359,970 of 1,726,950 tonnes), including Germany, Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, Latvia, Belgium, Italy, Austria (14,622 tonnes), Portugal (13,919 tonnes), Norway (10,695 tonnes) and the Czech Republic (10,354 tonnes), with the United States the largest buyer outside Europe and Kazakhstan (51,238 tonnes) leading the rest beyond Europe and North America. Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (60 countries with data in both years) rose from 1,500,912 tonnes to 1,726,911 tonnes, a change of 225,999 tonnes (15.1 percent). The totals listed for each year were 1,501,332 tonnes (80 reporters) and 1,726,950 tonnes (68 reporters). Denmark added 140,921 tonnes (from 38,456 to 179,377 tonnes, up 366.4 percent), Spain 89,707 tonnes (up 47.9 percent) and Germany 68,873 tonnes (up 14.0 percent). The United States fell 49,551 tonnes (down 14.6 percent), Latvia 48,252 tonnes (down 63.0 percent) and the Czech Republic 17,300 tonnes (down 62.6 percent). Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (55 countries with data in both years) fell from 1,938,222 tonnes to 1,725,391 tonnes, a change of -212,831 tonnes (-11.0 percent). The totals listed for each year were 2,019,460 tonnes (82 reporters) and 1,726,950 tonnes (68 reporters); 27 countries reporting in 2020 (81,238 tonnes combined, led by Russia with 77,511 tonnes) did not report in 2024. Germany fell 350,296 tonnes (down 38.5 percent) yet kept the lead by a 1.93 ratio, while Kazakhstan added 43,779 tonnes (from 7,459 to 51,238 tonnes) and Sweden 19,303 tonnes (from 9,115 to 28,418 tonnes, up 211.8 percent). This table sums FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows into yearly reporter totals for item Rye, import quantity and import value, 2020-2024. The rye imports series displays quantities below 1,000 tonnes to two decimals and larger quantities as whole tonnes; its values are full current US dollars without inflation adjustment. The 2024 rye imports ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities; values are not used for ranking. In the rye imports data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. The rye imports change uses overlapping reporters only; countries entering or leaving the listed set are shown separately. Partner-derived gap filling and food-aid additions can apply, and unreconciled bilateral pairs mean an export entry and its mirror import may not match.Rye Imports by Country in 2024

Frequently Asked Questions
How much did Denmark's rye imports increase?
Denmark reported 7,589 tonnes for 2020, 38,456 tonnes for 2023 and 179,377 tonnes for 2024, with growth concentrated in the last year (+140,921 tonnes). All three are reported quantities, so the ascent is visible in the data rather than an artifact of missing reports.
Can the leader shrink and still lead?
Germany fell from 910,569 tonnes in 2020 to 560,273 tonnes in 2024 (down 38.5 percent) and still leads the United States by a 1.93 ratio. The gap behind the leader stayed wide enough that the falling total did not cost it the top rank.
Why do Russia's 77,511 tonnes matter if Russia is absent in 2024?
Russia reported 77,511 tonnes for 2020 and 561.85 tonnes for 2021, then nothing from 2022 onward, so it sits outside the 2024 ranking and the 2020-2024 change universe. Its 2020 quantity is a major part of the gap between the annual totals and common-universe change for that window.
Which questions can this rye imports table not answer?
Whether rye output rose or fell, who consumed it, or what it cost to produce; none of that is in this dataset. It records import quantities and values by reporter, so only import-side comparisons hold.
