Spirits, Liqueurs and Other Spirituous Beverages Consumption by Country

China recorded the highest spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages food supply in 2023, at 11,223,457 tonnes, or about 44.0 percent of the total reported by countries with available data. India ranked second at 3,078,599 tonnes, followed by the United States at 1,557,152 tonnes. Estonia had the highest reported food supply per person, at 57.49 grams per day. These FAO figures measure food available for human consumption, not actual individual intake.

Russia placed fourth at 1,287,065 tonnes, with Thailand fifth at 844,415 and the Philippines sixth at 734,667. France, Germany, South Africa and Brazil closed the top ten between 396,595 and 601,069 tonnes. The top three held 62.2 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 70.5 percent. China had the highest listed food supply, while Estonia had the highest per-capita food supply.

• Chinese spirits sag: down 1,002,205 tonnes, or 8.2 percent, the heaviest latest-year loss.
• British spirits triple: up 162,000 tonnes, or 236.9 percent, the biggest latest-year gain.
• Indian spirits climb: up 110,144 tonnes, or 3.7 percent, firming second place.
• Korean spirits halve: down 105,532 tonnes, or 49.9 percent, dropping out of the top ten.

Changes in Reported Supply, 2022-2023

China's reported food supply fell by 1,002,205 tonnes from 2022 to 2023, an 8.2 percent decrease to 11,223,457 tonnes. South Korea recorded the next-largest decline among the highlighted countries, falling by 105,532 tonnes (49.9 percent). South Africa decreased by 72,185 tonnes (13.7 percent), Thailand by 68,190 tonnes (7.5 percent), and Australia by 61,071 tonnes (35.0 percent).

The United Kingdom recorded the largest increase among the countries highlighted here, rising by 162,000 tonnes (236.9 percent) to 230,393 tonnes. India increased by 110,144 tonnes (3.7 percent), while Russia rose by 80,815 tonnes (6.7 percent). Across the 176 countries with values in both years, the listed total fell by approximately 1.11 million tonnes, or 4.2 percent.

The United States Contributed the Largest Share of Five-Year Growth

Across the 175 countries with values in both 2019 and 2023, the listed total increased from 23,553,660 to 25,501,096 tonnes, a rise of 1,947,437 tonnes (8.3 percent). The United States contributed the largest increase among individual countries, adding 655,996 tonnes (72.8 percent), equivalent to about 33.7 percent of the net increase across this common-country group.

India added 557,764 tonnes (22.1 percent), South Africa 201,029 tonnes (78.8 percent), and the United Kingdom 156,345 tonnes (211.1 percent). China and Brazil each added about 140,000 tonnes. Germany's reported supply fell by 136,399 tonnes (20.0 percent), while Mexico's fell by 105,726 tonnes (75.3 percent).

Cuba reported 206,915 tonnes in 2019 but has no reported values for 2020 to 2023. Its later values must therefore be treated as missing, not as zero.

Estonia Ranked First in Food Supply per Person

Estonia's 57.49 grams a day beat the Bahamas' 51.40 in second and Belarus' 43.26 in third. The Czech Republic sat fourth at 41.65 grams, with Bosnia and Herzegovina at 38.42 and Luxembourg at 32.95. Thailand, Portugal, Grenada and Haiti followed below 33 grams. China, first by volume, missed the per-person top ten. Estonia recorded the highest per-capita figure in each year from 2019 through 2023.

Undenatured ethyl alcohol below 80 percent volume, spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages for human consumption are recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. The short name above stands for that official scope, pinned here and in the methodology. Annual totals sum reporting countries only.

The United Kingdom rose from 74,048 tonnes in 2019 to 230,393 tonnes in 2023, with an interim dip in 2022. Cuba reported 206,915 tonnes in 2019 but has no reported values for 2020 to 2023; those later values are missing, not zero. Mexico fell 75.3 percent over five years but remained far above zero. Large shifts and transitions to reported zero should be interpreted cautiously, as the table alone does not explain why they occurred.

Methodology

The data come from the FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023. The selected item covers undenatured ethyl alcohol with an alcohol strength below 80 percent by volume, spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages. Food supply is reported in tonnes (element 5141) and grams per capita per day (element 665).

The 2023 listed total is the sum of reported country values for that year. The dataset includes 177 country entries after aggregate rows are excluded; 176 have a reported value for 2023. Year-over-year comparisons use countries with values in both years, while the 2019-2023 comparison uses countries with values at both endpoints.

A blank value indicates missing data and is not treated as zero. Reported zeros are retained as published. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base; a percentage change is not calculated where that base is zero. Large year-to-year changes and transitions to reported zero should be interpreted cautiously, as the table alone does not explain why they occurred. Values below 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimal places where applicable.

These figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of how much people actually drank.
