Stimulants Consumption by Country
China held 15,871 thousand tonnes of listed stimulants food supply in 2023, 31.8 percent of a 49,854-thousand-tonne total. The five-year increase of 45.3 percent warrants caution because the underlying data contain large step changes: Kenya rose from 9 to 1,940 thousand tonnes, India from 1,256 to 5,897 and Vietnam from 125 to 1,448, with most of each gain appearing as a step change in 2020. The single-year change of 1.7 percent, carried by China and Brazil, is the cleaner read on recent movement. Sri Lanka leads per person at 52.21 kilograms per person per year.
China leads at 15,871 thousand tonnes, 2.69 times India at 5,897, with the United States third at 2,443 and Brazil fourth at 2,033. Per capita the order is tea-country led: Sri Lanka at 52.21 kilograms from 1,199 thousand tonnes, then Hong Kong at 47.88 and Kenya at 35.05 kilograms. China, first by total, records 11.16 kilograms per person. The stimulants aggregate covers the coffee, cocoa and tea items in the FAO Food Balances classification. Its tea component uses the FBS lump figure, the same series that the separate tea article sets aside in favour of SUA packed-tea detail, so this aggregate inherits the lump series' coverage breaks. Five reporters account for 82.8 percent of the five-year net gain, and four of the five show their largest single jump between 2019 and 2020 rather than a gradual climb. The year-to-year changes since then are modest by comparison, which is why the 2022-2023 window provides a clearer view of recent direction. The 2023 table is led by China at 15,871 thousand tonnes, with India second at 5,897 and the United States third at 2,443. Brazil and Türkiye complete the top five at 2,033 and 1,989 thousand tonnes, respectively. China holds 31.8 percent of the 49,854-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 48.6 percent of the listed total, the top five 56.6 percent and the top ten 71.0 percent. Per capita, Sri Lanka's 52.21 kilograms per person per year lead Hong Kong at 47.88 kilograms, while the United States, third by total, records 7.11 kilograms. Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 49,023 thousand tonnes to 49,854 thousand tonnes, a gain of 831 thousand tonnes (1.7 percent). The two years share the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China added 924 thousand tonnes (up 6.2 percent), Brazil added 729 thousand tonnes (up 55.9 percent), Türkiye added 510 thousand tonnes (up 34.5 percent) and Hong Kong added 221 thousand tonnes (up 163.7 percent), while the United States fell 421 thousand tonnes (down 14.7 percent), Kenya fell 392 thousand tonnes (down 16.8 percent), Russia fell 227 thousand tonnes (down 33.6 percent) and India fell 226 thousand tonnes (down 3.7 percent). Brazil's rise from 1,304 to 2,033 thousand tonnes (up 55.9 percent) and Hong Kong's from 135 to 356 (up 163.7 percent) are the fastest proportional gains among reporters adding more than 200 thousand tonnes. China's gain alone exceeds the net annual change, with the United States and Kenya offsetting part of it. For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 34,308 thousand tonnes to 49,854 thousand tonnes, a gain of 15,546 thousand tonnes (45.3 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 15 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. India added 4,641 thousand tonnes (up 369.5 percent), China added 3,489 thousand tonnes (up 28.2 percent), Kenya added 1,931 thousand tonnes, Türkiye added 1,493 thousand tonnes (up 301.0 percent), Vietnam added 1,323 thousand tonnes, Brazil added 913 thousand tonnes (up 81.5 percent) and Indonesia added 592 thousand tonnes (up 105.0 percent), while Russia fell 418 thousand tonnes (down 48.3 percent). India contributes 29.9 percent of the five-year net increase, China 22.4 percent and Kenya 12.4 percent. The year-by-year records show Kenya at 9 thousand tonnes in 2019 and 2,484 in 2020, India at 1,256 in 2019 and 5,592 in 2020, Vietnam at 125 in 2019 and 1,398 in 2020, and Türkiye at 496 in 2019 and 1,687 in 2020. The figures record the size of these steps, but they do not identify what caused them, and a 45.3 percent headline should not be read as measured growth in stimulants actually consumed. The numbers in this article come from the Stimulants item in the FAO Food Balances, measured under the Food element as food available for human consumption during the reference year. A combined stimulants total of this kind should not be read as an estimate of what people actually ate. The aggregate sums the coffee, cocoa and tea items as recorded in the Food Balances; the tea component uses the FBS lump figure, while the separate tea article uses SUA packed-tea detail instead. The per-capita measure converts the reported food supply into kilograms available per person during the year. It offers a population-adjusted view of the same item, which is why stimulants look concentrated in populous countries by total but in tea-drinking reporters per person. In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed stimulants food supply among the 176 reporters with reported values, at 15,871 thousand tonnes. India ranked second at 5,897 thousand tonnes, while the United States ranked third at 2,443 thousand tonnes. Sri Lanka had the highest per-capita stimulants food supply at 52.21 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of stimulants actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Stimulants from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, because food available for human consumption is not the same as actual dietary intake. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero. The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities are shown in thousand tonnes as reported, without additional rounding. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The listed total of 49,854 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value. This article covers the stimulants aggregate; coffee, cocoa and tea are treated in separate articles.Stimulants Food Supply at a Glance

Stimulants Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did Kenya's stimulants supply rise from 9 to 1,940 thousand tonnes over five years?
Kenya's listed supply stood at 9 thousand tonnes in 2019, 2,484 in 2020 and 1,940 thousand tonnes in 2023. The figures record the size of the step recorded between 2019 and 2020, but they do not identify what caused it, and the change should not be read as measured growth in stimulants consumed.
Why should the 45.3 percent five-year increase be read with caution?
Most of the net gain comes from step changes recorded in 2020 for India, Kenya, Vietnam and Türkiye rather than gradual growth across the window. The 2022-2023 change of 1.7 percent, carried by China and Brazil, gives the more reliable picture of recent direction.
Is the food supply of stimulants the same as stimulants consumed?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually consumed, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
