The file covers 177 reporters; 176 of them carry a 2023 value, adding to a listed total of 3,590,489 tonnes. The United States leads at 17.0 percent of the listed total, while the common total increased 21.5 percent over five years.

The United States reported the largest 2023 supply at 611,878 tonnes, while Gambia recorded the highest per-capita figure at 28.43 grams per person per day.

Four Facts on Shared Growth

• The common total increased 21.5 percent over five years, with the six largest positive contributors accounting for much of the net gain; China alone fell 147,618 tonnes.

Five Years Added 21.5 Percent on Shared Gains

The common total moved from 2,954,608 tonnes to 3,590,489, up 635,881 tonnes or 21.5 percent across 176 reporters. The United States added 125,662 tonnes (up 25.8 percent), 19.8 percent of the net increase, with the United Kingdom adding 83,930 (up 68.4 percent), Iran 65,599 (up 90.9 percent), Venezuela 62,213 (up 2,096.8 percent), Poland 57,772 (up 1,559.3 percent) and South Korea 52,377 (up 288.6 percent); China fell 147,618 (down 83.6 percent) while Vietnam fell 47,646 (down 34.8 percent). Cuba's 1,687 tonnes left the comparison; none entered.

The United States Holds 17.0 Percent of the Total

The United States leads the 2023 table with 611,878 tonnes, or 17.0 percent of the listed total. That is 2.66 times South Africa's 229,909 tonnes in second place. The United Kingdom follows at 206,705 with Iran at 137,741; the top three hold 29.2 percent, the top five 35.6 percent and the top ten 46.9 percent. Guatemala, Vietnam, Canada, France, Belarus and Thailand complete the ten. Per person, Gambia stands first at 28.43 grams with Latvia at 26.82 — while Belarus pairs ninth by volume with third per person at 23.52, and Guatemala fifth by volume with sixth per person at 13.87.

2022 to 2023: Iran Doubled as China Fell 80 Percent

The common total rose from 3,504,743 tonnes to 3,590,489, up 85,746 tonnes or 2.4 percent across 176 reporters, with none entering or leaving. Iran added 68,946 tonnes (up 100.2 percent), with South Korea adding 37,942 (up 116.4 percent), the United Kingdom 27,104 (up 15.1 percent), Belgium 24,958 (up 2,604.2 percent from 958.36 tonnes) and Malaysia 22,640 (up 541.1 percent); China fell 115,390 (down 80.0 percent), with the United States down 34,764 (down 5.4 percent) and Argentina down 23,890 (down 50.7 percent).

What Does Sugar Confectionery Cover?

The FAO item covers sugar confectionery, a category of sweets that includes products such as boiled sweets, toffees, marshmallows and fondant. It is separate from raw and refined sugars, which have their own FAO items. Food supply quantity captures what was available for human consumption during the reference year. The gram-per-day figure spreads that availability across the population on a daily basis.

Methodology

One hundred seventy-seven reporters holding a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023 make the universe; reporters alone populate the tables, with World, regional and China (aggregate) rows outside the count and China standing for the China reporter. All percentages use the earlier endpoint year as base across reporters present in both years. Zero-base years give no percentage, and percentages from tiny bases should be read with the base alongside.

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity in both measures — element 5141 in tonnes for totals, element 665 in grams per capita per day — covers sugar confectionery over 2019-2023. The measured object is availability for human consumption in the reference year, not intake. A reported zero is treated as zero, while a blank value indicates that no value was reported. The 2023 listed total of 3,590,489 tonnes sums the 176 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published.
