China ranked third with 247,310 tonnes. Together, the top three countries accounted for 34.1 percent of the 2,474,178-tonne listed total. Tunisia had the highest food supply per person, at 66.00 grams per day, ahead of Mauritius at 12.81 grams and Belgium at 12.63 grams. Across countries reporting in both 2022 and 2023, the total fell by 145,787 tonnes, or about 5.6 percent. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not actual intake.

Separated by Eight Thousand

The United Kingdom led, 1.03 times Tunisia. China sat third at 247,310 tonnes, ahead of Germany at 231,197 and Argentina at 151,228. The top three held 34.1 percent of the 2,474,178-tonne total, and the top five 49.5 percent. Canada, France, Iran, Belgium and Australia closed the top ten between 51,704 and 146,367 tonnes. Of 176 countries in the file, 175 carried a 2023 value.

Changes in Peeled Tomato Supply, 2022-2023

Across the 175 countries with reported values in both 2022 and 2023, supply fell 5.6 percent, from 2,619,965 tonnes, a loss of 145,787. The United Kingdom recorded the largest decline, shedding 65,848 tonnes, down 17.9 percent. Argentina shed 60,448 tonnes, down 28.6 percent. Germany shed 29,986 tonnes. Tunisia added 22,335 tonnes, up 8.2 percent. France shed 16,853 tonnes, while Iran added 16,263 tonnes and Spain 15,932. Portugal added 14,736 tonnes from 892.

Argentina Records the Largest Five-Year Decline

Among the 171 countries with reported values in both 2019 and 2023, supply fell 7.6 percent, from 2,673,774 tonnes, a loss of 202,070. Argentina recorded the largest decline, shedding 166,362 tonnes, down 52.4 percent from 317,590. Iran shed 72,620 tonnes, down 54.2 percent from 134,047. The United Kingdom shed 57,717 tonnes. Tunisia added 50,284 tonnes, up 20.6 percent. Spain shed 34,342 tonnes. Poland added 16,744 tonnes, up 107.5 percent from 15,577. Portugal added 15,482 tonnes from 146, and Italy 14,949 from 1,374. Cuba reported 2,150 tonnes in 2019 with no later values, while Angola, Honduras, Micronesia and Myanmar first reported values in the window, adding 2,474 tonnes to the 2023 total.

Tunisia Leads Per Person

Tunisia's 66.00 grams a day topped the per-person table, ahead of Mauritius at 12.81 and Belgium at 12.63. The United Kingdom sat at 12.04 grams after holding first by volume. Sweden and Denmark followed between 11 and 12 grams. Canada, sixth by volume at 146,367 tonnes, sat at 10.20 grams per person. Germany, fourth at 231,197 tonnes, reported 7.49 grams per person.

What Peeled Tomatoes Cover

This dataset follows the FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts item "Tomatoes, peeled (o/t vinegar)." It reports food supply available for human consumption, rather than the quantity actually eaten. Country totals include only reporting countries, while year-to-year changes compare countries with values in both years. A reported zero is distinct from a blank value.

The United States reported 1,158 tonnes in 2019 and a reported zero in 2023, while Spain fell from 83,647 tonnes in 2019 to 10,080 tonnes in 2020, and Iran moved sharply between 2020 and 2021. Such breaks in individual series should be checked against FAOSTAT records before being interpreted as real changes.
