Butter of Cow Milk Consumption by Country
The United States ranked first in 2023, with 982,753 tonnes of butter of cow milk food supply, accounting for 17.2 percent of the annual listed total. France ranked second at 542,176 tonnes, followed by Germany at 469,394 tonnes. On a per-person basis, Bahrain ranked first at 23.24 grams per person per day, ahead of France at 22.36 grams. The figures cover 175 countries and areas with reported 2023 values and measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.
Russia placed fourth at 404,711 tonnes, with Poland fifth at 207,866 and the United Kingdom sixth at 204,768. China, Iran, Brazil and Canada closed the top ten between 144,883 and 200,514 tonnes. The top three held 35.0 percent of the annual listed food supply total, and the top five 45.7 percent. The United States had the highest listed food supply, while Bahrain had the highest per-capita food supply. The United States recorded the largest increase in butter of cow milk food supply between 2022 and 2023, adding 94,014 tonnes, or 10.6 percent, to reach 982,753 tonnes. Türkiye increased by 28,459 tonnes (27.4 percent), while Iran added 26,975 tonnes (16.4 percent). Poland rose by 13,332 tonnes (6.9 percent), and Mexico by 9,756 tonnes (24.4 percent). In contrast, the Netherlands fell by 36,845 tonnes (30.5 percent), Egypt declined by 13,715 tonnes (17.9 percent), and Denmark decreased by 11,751 tonnes (23.4 percent). Across the 175 countries and areas with values in both years, the listed total rose from 5,601,235 tonnes in 2022 to 5,702,873 tonnes in 2023, an increase of about 1.8 percent. From 2019 to 2023, the listed total for the 175 countries and areas with values in both years increased from 5,543,192 to 5,702,873 tonnes, a rise of about 2.9 percent. The United States added 61,671 tonnes, while China increased by 57,638 tonnes and Brazil by 40,621 tonnes. Russia and Poland each recorded increases of about 26,800 tonnes. Türkiye had the largest absolute decline among the countries highlighted, falling by 110,961 tonnes (45.6 percent). Myanmar's supply fell by 33,121 tonnes (64.4 percent), the larger percentage decline of the two. Cuba had a 2019 value of 1,124 tonnes but no reported values for the following years, so it is absent from the 2019-2023 common-year comparison. Bahrain recorded the highest per-person food supply in 2023 at 23.24 grams per person per day, followed by France at 22.36 grams and Ireland at 19.42 grams. Denmark ranked next at 17.75 grams, narrowly ahead of Belgium at 17.71 grams. Iceland recorded 17.50 grams, while Germany reached 15.21 grams. The United States led in total volume but did not rank among the ten highest countries by the per-person measure. These rankings differ because total tonnage reflects the overall quantity reported, whereas the per-person figure adjusts the measure for population. Cow-milk butter for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. Nepal fell to a reported zero in 2023 from 65.19 tonnes in 2022, and Ghana reported 326.02 tonnes in 2023 after zeros in 2021 and 2022. The dataset distinguishes reported zeros from missing values. A reported zero is retained as supplied by FAO, while a blank indicates that no value is available for that year. Large changes, including a fall from a substantial reported quantity to zero, should not automatically be interpreted as proof that the food was no longer available. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts report butter of cow milk food supply in tonnes under element 5141 and in grams per person per day under element 665. This page covers the 2019-2023 period. Annual totals sum the reporting countries and areas with a value for the relevant year; aggregate rows are excluded. Year-to-year comparisons include only countries and areas with values in both comparison years. Percentage changes use the earlier year's value as the base and are not calculated when that value is zero. Reported zeros are retained, while blank cells indicate missing values. These figures describe food available for human consumption and should not be interpreted as direct measurements of the amount people actually ate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which country had the largest butter of cow milk food supply in 2023?
The United States ranked first with 982,753 tonnes in 2023, representing about 17.2 percent of the annual listed total in the same listed table that year.
Which country ranked highest for butter food supply per person?
Bahrain ranked first at 23.24 grams per person per day, followed by France at 22.36 grams and Ireland at 19.42 grams per day in the same table.
How did butter food supply change worldwide from 2022 to 2023?
Across the 175 countries and areas with values in both years, the listed total increased from 5,601,235 to 5,702,873 tonnes, a rise of about 1.8 percent over the comparison period.
Which country had the largest decline by tonnage between 2019 and 2023?
Türkiye recorded the largest absolute decline among the countries highlighted in this comparison, falling by 110,961 tonnes, or 45.6 percent, across the five years between 2019 and 2023.
Do these figures show how much butter people actually ate?
No. FAO's food supply figures measure the butter available for human consumption in the reference year, not the quantity actually eaten by individual people, so intake is not directly shown.
