Cassava and Products Consumption

The 2023 ranking shows a clear concentration at the top: DR Congo recorded 41,605 thousand tonnes, compared with 36,283 thousand tonnes for Nigeria and 16,846 thousand tonnes for Indonesia. The per-capita ranking tells a similar story at the top, with DR Congo at 393.28 kilograms per person per year and Angola at 262.87 kilograms.

Key Takeaways

In 2023, DR Congo had the largest listed supply of cassava and products at 41,605 thousand tonnes, followed by Nigeria at 36,283 thousand tonnes. Indonesia ranked third with 16,846 thousand tonnes. On a per-capita basis, DR Congo recorded the highest food supply at 393.28 kilograms per person per year, followed by Angola at 262.87 kilograms.

Across the 115 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, listed cassava and products supply increased by 3,726 thousand tonnes, or 2.1 percent. DR Congo contributed 1,233 thousand tonnes of that increase, while Cambodia recorded the largest decline at 1,794 thousand tonnes. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of cassava actually eaten.

Cassava and Products Consumption by Country in 2023

DR Congo had the largest listed food supply of cassava and products in the 2023 data with 41,605 thousand tonnes (22.8 percent of the listed total), followed by Nigeria with 36,283 thousand tonnes (19.9 percent) and Indonesia with 16,846 thousand tonnes (9.2 percent). Angola ranked fourth with 9,660 thousand tonnes and Ghana fifth with 8,447 thousand tonnes.

The top three reporters hold 51.9 percent of the listed 2023 total, the top five 61.8 percent and the top ten 79.3 percent of the 182,538-thousand-tonne total. Seven of the ten largest reporters are in Africa.

Cambodia Falls 1,794 Thousand Tonnes as Cassava Food Supply Grows 2.1 Percent Between 2022 and 2023

Among the 115 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 178,812 thousand tonnes to 182,538 thousand tonnes, a gain of 3,726 thousand tonnes (2.1 percent). The annual listed totals across all reporters were 178,812 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 182,538 thousand tonnes in 2023; Saint Kitts and Nevis entered with a zero 2023 quantity and no reporter with a positive quantity left. DR Congo added 1,233 thousand tonnes (up 3.1 percent), accounting for 33.1 percent of the increase, followed by Tanzania with 1,092 thousand tonnes (up 15.3 percent), Mozambique with 910 thousand tonnes (up 17.4 percent), Zambia with 904 thousand tonnes (up 27.2 percent), Nigeria with 891 thousand tonnes (up 2.5 percent) and Ivory Coast with 671 thousand tonnes (up 14.2 percent), while Cambodia fell 1,794 thousand tonnes (down 44.1 percent) and Indonesia 740 thousand tonnes (down 4.2 percent).

Nigeria Adds 10,772 Thousand Tonnes as Cassava Food Supply Grows 17.6 Percent Since 2019

For the 114 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 155,238 thousand tonnes to 182,538 thousand tonnes, a gain of 27,300 thousand tonnes (17.6 percent). The 2019 total includes 115 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 116; Cuba, with 563 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value, while two reporters entered with zero 2023 quantities. Nigeria added 10,772 thousand tonnes (up 42.2 percent), accounting for 39.5 percent of the increase, followed by DR Congo with 4,827 thousand tonnes (up 13.1 percent), Tanzania with 2,937 thousand tonnes (up 55.5 percent), Angola with 2,464 thousand tonnes (up 34.2 percent), Indonesia with 1,627 thousand tonnes (up 10.7 percent), Ghana with 1,375 thousand tonnes (up 19.4 percent) and Mozambique with 1,263 thousand tonnes (up 26.0 percent), while Cambodia fell 1,959 thousand tonnes (down 46.3 percent).

The increase is concentrated in Africa: Nigeria, DR Congo, Tanzania and Angola together account for 76.9 percent of the 2019-2023 common-reporter increase. DR Congo leads both measures, first by total and first per capita at 393.28 kilograms, while Nigeria records 159.22 kilograms.

What Does Cassava and Products Consumption Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the cassava and products figure used here is the amount recorded under the Food element. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of how much cassava people actually ate. The item covers cassava and products derived from it, including processed forms such as cassava flour, tapioca, dried cassava and cassava starch, and excludes other roots and tubers recorded under their own items.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Quick Answer

In 2023, DR Congo had the largest listed food supply of cassava and products at 41,605 thousand tonnes, followed by Nigeria at 36,283 thousand tonnes and Indonesia at 16,846 thousand tonnes. DR Congo also had the highest per-capita food supply at 393.28 kilograms per person per year. The dataset contains 117 reporters in the five-year series, with 116 reporting a value for 2023. The figures represent food available for human consumption in FAO Food Balances and are not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Cassava and products from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer.

The reporter universe contains 117 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 182,538 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 116 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which countries in this table are the largest cassava consumers?

DR Congo led in 2023 with 41,605 thousand tonnes, followed by Nigeria with 36,283 thousand tonnes and Indonesia with 16,846 thousand tonnes. Seven of the ten largest reporters are in Africa.

Why did Cambodia fall 44.1 percent between 2022 and 2023?

Cambodia dropped from 4,068 thousand tonnes in 2022 to 2,274 thousand tonnes in 2023, a decrease of 1,794 thousand tonnes, the largest decline in the year. Its 2019-2023 total also fell 46.3 percent.

Is cassava and products food supply the same as cassava eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
