Cassava Starch Consumption by Country
FAO Supply Utilization Accounts record starch of cassava available for human consumption, in tonnes and in grams per person per day, from 2019 through 2023. The file covers 16 reporters, all with a 2023 value, adding to a listed total of 74,702 tonnes. India holds nearly three-quarters of the 2023 supply — in a table that moved 133 tonnes in five years.
India reported the largest 2023 supply at 54,689 tonnes, while Hong Kong recorded the highest per-capita figure at 1.91 grams per person per day. The common total moved from 73,756 tonnes to 73,889, up 133 tonnes or 0.2 percent across 15 reporters. India fell 2,913 tonnes (down 5.1 percent) while Cameroon added 2,464 (up 33.9 percent); Papua New Guinea fell 948 (down 86.9 percent) while Nepal added 721 (up 1,281.9 percent) from 56.25 tonnes; Rwanda added 299 (up 13.6 percent) and Hong Kong 285 (up 5.8 percent), while Macau fell 76 (down 21.6 percent). Morocco added 249 tonnes from a reported 2019 zero. Panama entered with 813 tonnes; none left. India's 54,689 tonnes top the 2023 table at 73.2 percent of the listed total, 5.62 times Cameroon's 9,735 in second. Hong Kong follows at 5,177 with Rwanda at 2,494; the top three hold 93.2 percent, the top five 97.6 percent and the top ten 99.9 percent. Panama, Nepal, Macau, Fiji, Morocco and Papua New Guinea complete the ten. The common total rose from 73,423 tonnes to 74,702, up 1,279 tonnes or 1.7 percent across 16 reporters, with none entering or leaving. India added 843 tonnes (up 1.6 percent), with Hong Kong adding 527 (up 11.3 percent), Panama 361 (up 79.9 percent), Morocco 182 (up 269.8 percent) and Cameroon 178 (up 1.9 percent). Papua New Guinea fell 605 tonnes (down 80.8 percent), with Fiji down 156 (down 36.9 percent) and Nepal down 60 (down 7.2 percent). Hong Kong's 1.91 grams per person per day head the per-capita table from 5,177 tonnes, with Macau at 1.06 from 276.74 and Cameroon at 0.94 from 9,735. Fiji follows at 0.79, with Panama at 0.5, Rwanda at 0.49 and India at 0.10 grams — the 73.2-percent volume leader sits seventh per person. Nepal, Namibia and Papua New Guinea trail at 0.07, 0.05 and 0.04. The FAO item covers starch of cassava, not flour and not tapioca, which have their own articles; the three are not added together here. Food supply quantity captures what was available for human consumption during the reference year. The gram-per-day figure spreads that availability across the population on a daily basis. India had the largest 2023 listed cassava-starch supply at 54,689 tonnes, while Hong Kong had the highest per-capita figure at 1.91 grams per person per day. The 2023 listed total was 74,702 tonnes across 16 reporters. Across the 15 reporters with values in both 2019 and 2023, the total was up 0.2 percent over the five-year period. These figures record food available for human consumption, not amounts actually eaten. Sixteen reporters, each with a 2023 value, fill this file; the tables show reporters only, with no aggregate, regional or world rows, and China here is the China reporter. Percentages use the earlier endpoint year as base across reporters present in both years. No percentage comes from a zero base, and small-base percentages should be read with the base in view. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity covers starch of cassava in both measures: element 5141 in tonnes for totals, element 665 in grams per capita per day, 2019 to 2023. Availability for human consumption in the reference year is the object, not intake. Zero reports zero; blank reports nothing. The 2023 listed total of 74,702 tonnes sums all 16 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published. Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did the total barely move in five years?
India fell 2,913 tonnes while Cameroon added 2,464, and smaller moves filled the rest, leaving a 133-tonne net change. The figures record the offset, not what caused either side.
How can Nepal rise 1,281.9 percent and stay sixth?
Nepal rose from 56.25 tonnes in 2019 to 777.34 in 2023; from a tiny base, even a large multiple stays small in tonnes. Small-base percentages should be read with the base in mind.
Does India dominate per person too?
No: India records 0.10 grams a day per person, seventh, against Hong Kong's 1.91. The per-capita figure expresses the reported food supply relative to population on a daily basis.
