Cassava Flour Consumption by Country
FAO Supply Utilization Accounts record flour of cassava available for human consumption, in tonnes and in grams per person per day, from 2019 through 2023. The file covers 80 reporters; 74 of them carry a 2023 value, adding to a listed total of 11,237,323 tonnes. Nigeria holds nearly half the 2023 supply and drove most of a 42.8 percent five-year expansion.
Nigeria reported the largest 2023 supply at 5,371,986 tonnes, while Zambia recorded the highest per-capita figure at 147.65 grams per person per day. The common total moved from 7,871,206 tonnes to 11,236,167, up 3,364,961 tonnes or 42.8 percent across 56 reporters. Nigeria added 2,062,813 tonnes (up 62.3 percent) — 61.3 percent of the net increase — with Zambia adding 876,460 (up 364.5 percent), Angola 287,635 (up 40.9 percent), Rwanda 81,281 (up 29.0 percent) and India 77,835 (up 6.5 percent). Laos fell 77,715 tonnes (down 20.3 percent) and the Philippines 58,853 (down 22.4 percent), while Guinea added 23,197 (up 87.4 percent). Four reporters left with 12 tonnes between them; eighteen entered with 1,156. Nigeria's 5,371,986 tonnes lead the 2023 table at 47.8 percent of the listed total, 4.24 times India's 1,266,738 in second. Zambia follows at 1,116,883 with Angola at 990,742; the top three hold 69.0 percent, the top five 84.0 percent and the top ten 96.0 percent. Brazil, Rwanda, Laos, Congo, Indonesia and the Philippines complete the ten. Per person, Zambia stands first at 147.65 grams — third by volume and first per person — with Congo at 112.49, Laos at 109.05, Angola at 73.86, Rwanda at 70.99 and Nigeria at 64.58 behind. The common total rose from 10,981,298 tonnes to 11,237,072, up 255,774 tonnes or 2.3 percent across 66 reporters. Zambia added 239,022 tonnes (up 27.2 percent), with Nigeria adding 75,152 (up 1.4 percent), Thailand 59,112 (up 307.9 percent), Angola 33,995 (up 3.6 percent) and Laos 15,943 (up 5.5 percent). Indonesia fell 94,305 tonnes (down 30.2 percent), with India down 58,550 (down 4.4 percent) and Guinea down 15,252 (down 23.5 percent). Thailand's jump follows a dip to 19,201 tonnes in 2022. One reporter exited and eight entered with 250 tonnes between them. The FAO item covers flour of cassava, not fresh roots and not tapioca, which have their own articles; the three are not added together here. Food supply quantity captures what was available for human consumption during the reference year. The gram-per-day figure spreads that availability across the population on a daily basis. Nigeria had the largest 2023 listed cassava-flour supply at 5,371,986 tonnes, while Zambia had the highest per-capita figure at 147.65 grams per person per day. The 2023 listed total was 11,237,323 tonnes across 74 reporters, up 42.8 percent on a common-reporter basis since 2019. These figures record food available for human consumption, not amounts actually eaten. Behind this article lies an 80-reporter file, each reporter holding a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023; the tables show reporters only, with World, regional and China (aggregate) rows set aside, and China here is the China reporter. Percentages rest on the earlier endpoint year across reporters present in both years. Zero-base years yield no percentage, and small-base percentages deserve a look at the base. FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity is the source in both measures: element 5141 in tonnes for totals, element 665 in grams per capita per day, for flour of cassava across 2019-2023. Availability for human consumption in the reference year is what is counted, not intake. Zero reports zero; blank reports nothing. The 2023 listed total of 11,237,323 tonnes sums the 74 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published. Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Nigeria dominate this table?
Nigeria reported 5,371,986 tonnes in 2023, 47.8 percent of the listed total, and added 2,062,813 tonnes since 2019. The figures describe the scale of the lead, not its causes.
How did Zambia climb to third and first per person?
Zambia rose from 240,423 tonnes in 2019 to 1,116,883 in 2023 (up 364.5 percent) and records 147.65 grams a day per person. The per-capita figure expresses the reported food supply relative to population on a daily basis.
Who are the eighteen newcomers?
Eighteen reporters entered with 1,156 tonnes between them. Four reporters left with 12 tonnes.
