India supplied the most cloves: 20,652 tonnes in 2023, 36.6 percent of the annual listed consumption total. Indonesia followed at 4,733 tonnes and Tanzania at 3,146, while Comoros led per person at 6.68 grams a day. The 2023 figures total 56,499 tonnes across 168 countries, 167 with values, covering food available for human consumption from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts for 2019-2023.

The ranking changes sharply when population size is considered. Comoros reached 6.68 grams per person per day, far ahead of Grenada at 0.93 grams and Maldives at 0.41 grams.

In 2023, India had the largest listed food supply of whole-stem raw cloves at 20,652 tonnes, equal to 36.6 percent of the 56,499 tonnes reported across 168 countries. Comoros ranked first per person at 6.68 grams per person per day. These figures represent food available for human consumption, not measured amounts actually eaten.

China placed fourth at 2,953 tonnes, with Comoros fifth at 2,074 and Saudi Arabia sixth at 1,991. The United States, Bangladesh, Kenya and Pakistan closed the top ten between 1,459 and 1,763 tonnes. India Extends Cloves (Whole Stems), Raw Lead

India added 4,223 tonnes between 2022 and 2023, up 25.7 percent to 20,652 tonnes. Tanzania added 1,114 tonnes, up 54.8 percent. Bangladesh added 789 tonnes, up 91.0 percent. Comoros added 608 tonnes, up 41.5 percent. Sri Lanka lost 1,296 tonnes, down 98.0 percent. Malaysia shed 1,122 tonnes, down 60.6 percent. Egypt gave up 655 tonnes, down 70.5 percent. Ghana fell 516 tonnes, down 82.6 percent. The 167 countries present in both years rose from 54,637 tonnes to 56,499 tonnes, up 1,862 tonnes, or 3.4 percent, with no entries or exits.

Madagascar Drops from 7,662 Tonnes to Zero

Between 2019 and 2023, the 160 countries present in both years grew from 52,369 tonnes to 56,417 tonnes, up 4,049 tonnes, or 7.7 percent. Madagascar went from 7,662 tonnes in 2019 to a reported zero in 2023. FAO lists zero for Madagascar in 2023 after 7,662 in 2019; zeros after large values are worth checking against the source. India added 7,342 tonnes, up 55.2 percent, accounting for 181.3 percent of the net gain. China added 1,876 tonnes, up 174.2 percent. Comoros added 1,745 tonnes, up 530.3 percent. Bangladesh added 994 tonnes, up 150.3 percent. Tanzania lost 2,326 tonnes, down 42.5 percent. Malaysia shed 1,141 tonnes, down 61.0 percent. Sri Lanka gave up 578 tonnes, down 95.7 percent. One country left holding nothing, against seven arrivals with 82 tonnes.

Comoros Rules Cloves (Whole Stems), Raw per Person

Comoros' 6.68 grams a day dwarfed Grenada's 0.93 in second. Maldives sat third at 0.41 grams, with Antigua and Barbuda at 0.24 and Djibouti at 0.23. Seychelles, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania and Fiji followed below 0.2 grams. India, first by volume, missed the per-person top ten. Small island populations dominate the per-person ranking, led by Comoros at 6.68 grams per person per day.

What the Cloves (Whole Stems), Raw Data Covers

Whole-stem cloves for human consumption are counted in tonnes and daily grams per person for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. The 2019 runner-up vanished, and India absorbed its share and more. Tonnage highlights the largest national food-supply totals, while the per-person measure changes the ranking by accounting for population size.

Sri Lanka fell 98.0 percent lately and 95.7 percent across five years, yet still reports traces near 26 tonnes, so it reads as retreat without a warning. Ghana's 82.6 percent latest fall and Egypt's 70.5 percent land the same way. Comoros climbed 530.3 percent across five years from 329 tonnes. No further zero followed a large value.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts file tonnage for human consumption under element 5141 and daily grams per person under element 665, shown for whole-stem cloves across 2019-2023. Percentages build on the earlier year, and zero bases build nothing. The universe totals 168 countries after aggregates are removed, 167 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 56,499 tonnes is the sum of every country with a 2023 value. A reported zero is kept, a blank is missing, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.
