About US Virgin Islands
The U.S. Virgin Islands is an organized, unincorporated island territory of the United States located in the Caribbean Sea. The territory consists of three main islands: St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John, along with several smaller surrounding islands.
The economy is heavily dependent on tourism, which is its primary industry. Visitors are drawn to the beautiful beaches, clear waters for snorkeling and diving, and duty-free shopping. The closure of the HOVENSA oil refinery in 2012 dealt a significant blow to the economy, but the tourism sector has since driven recovery.
Virgin Islands National Park covers approximately three-fifths of the island of St. John, preserving its natural and cultural heritage. Rum distilling was historically a major industry and remains a notable export. The capital is Charlotte Amalie, located on St. Thomas.
