Dry Cassava Consumption by Country
FAO Supply Utilization Accounts record dry cassava available for human consumption, in tonnes and in grams per person per day, from 2019 through 2023. The file covers 95 reporters; 90 of them carry a 2023 value, adding to a listed total of 4,025,520 tonnes. Tanzania holds nearly half the 2023 supply and tops the per-person list too — in a table where the two rankings largely agree.
Tanzania reported the largest 2023 supply at 1,859,236 tonnes and the highest per-capita figure at 76.46 grams per person per day. Tanzania's 1,859,236 tonnes lead the 2023 table at 46.2 percent of the listed total, 3.69 times Malawi's 504,203 in second. Cambodia follows at 349,759 with Angola at 309,230; the top three hold 67.4 percent, the top five 80.7 percent and the top ten 93.5 percent. Madagascar, Sierra Leone, Laos, Ghana, Indonesia and India complete the ten. Per person, the same seven reporters that lead by volume — Tanzania, Malawi, Cambodia, Angola, Madagascar, Sierra Leone and Laos — occupy the first seven per-person places in a different order: Tanzania at 76.46 grams, Sierra Leone at 66.81, Malawi at 65.45, Cambodia at 55.0, Laos at 47.89, Angola at 23.05 and Madagascar at 19.98. The common total moved from 3,360,057 tonnes to 4,025,463, up 665,406 tonnes or 19.8 percent across 84 reporters. Tanzania added 776,154 tonnes (up 71.7 percent), more than the entire net increase across common reporters; its increase was equivalent to 116.6 percent of the net gain because several other major reporters declined. Cambodia lost 497,128 (down 58.7 percent), offsetting 74.7 percent of it. Laos added 133,980 tonnes from a reported 2019 zero, with Angola adding 126,432 (up 69.2 percent), Sierra Leone 92,574 (up 81.4 percent) and Malawi 70,246 (up 16.2 percent); Rwanda fell 50,549 (down 79.3 percent) and Uganda 42,879 (down 69.6 percent). Four reporters left with 1 tonne between them; six entered with 57. The common total moved from 4,253,606 tonnes to 4,025,520, down 228,086 tonnes or 5.4 percent across 90 reporters, with none entering or leaving. Cambodia fell 453,003 tonnes (down 56.4 percent), while Tanzania added 277,301 (up 17.5 percent). Uganda fell 73,627 tonnes (down 79.8 percent) after spiking to 92,320 in 2022, with Rwanda down 39,529 (down 74.9 percent); Sierra Leone added 30,960 (up 17.7 percent) while Indonesia fell 30,469 (down 34.7 percent), Kenya added 17,183 (up 144.2 percent) and Malawi 12,313 (up 2.5 percent). The FAO item covers dried cassava — chips and dried roots — not fresh cassava, flour or tapioca, which have their own articles; the four are not added together here. Food supply quantity captures what was available for human consumption during the reference year. The gram-per-day figure spreads that availability across the population on a daily basis. Tanzania had the largest 2023 listed dry-cassava supply at 1,859,236 tonnes and the highest per-capita figure at 76.46 grams per person per day. The 2023 listed total was 4,025,520 tonnes across 90 reporters. On a common-reporter basis, the listed total increased 19.8 percent from 2019 to 2023. These figures record food available for human consumption, not amounts actually eaten. Ninety-five reporters form the universe: each held a value in at least one year from 2019 through 2023, and the tables show reporters only. World, regional and China (aggregate) rows sit outside the frame, with China standing for the China reporter. Percentages take the earlier endpoint year as base across reporters holding values at both ends; a zero base gives no percentage, and small bases call for a look at the base. Both measures come from FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity for dry cassava, element 5141 in tonnes for totals and element 665 in grams per capita per day, 2019 to 2023. Counted is availability for human consumption during the reference year, not intake. A zero cell is a reported zero; a blank cell is no report. The 2023 listed total of 4,025,520 tonnes sums the 90 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published. Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Do volume and per-person rankings usually match here?
They overlap unusually closely: the seven largest reporters by volume are also the seven highest per person, although their order changes. The figures show the overlap, not why it holds.
What pulled Cambodia down?
Cambodia fell 497,128 tonnes between 2019 and 2023, with 453,003 of that in the latest year alone. The figures record the timing and size, not the cause.
Who is new since 2019?
Six reporters entered with 57 tonnes between them; four left with 1 tonne. All movement sits at the margins of a Tanzania-led table.
