Five Markers of a Cassava Table

  • DR Congo holds 36.7 percent — 3.00 times Indonesia — with 1,077 grams per person.
  • Growth is broad: six reporters added between 848,726 and 1,464,607 tonnes each.
  • Zambia went from 2,921,484 tonnes to zero.
  • The latest year added 4.2 percent, led by DR Congo, Mozambique and Indonesia.
  • Cuba's 562,670 tonnes left; three small reporters entered.

DR Congo Holds 36.7 Percent and 1,077 Grams

DR Congo's 41,604,871 tonnes lead the 2023 table at 36.7 percent of the listed total, 3.00 times Indonesia's 13,846,600 in second. Nigeria follows at 8,000,000 with Ghana at 7,955,264; the top three hold 55.9 percent, the top five 68.2 percent and the top ten 86.0 percent. Mozambique, Ivory Coast, Angola, Brazil, Cameroon and China complete the ten. Per person, DR Congo also stands first at 1,077 grams a day, well ahead of Ghana's 645.06 in second, with Mozambique, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Angola, Cameroon, Congo, Paraguay and Liberia behind.

Almost Every Large Reporter Grew

The common total moved from 104,221,734 tonnes to 113,431,972, up 9,210,238 tonnes or 8.8 percent across 75 reporters. DR Congo added 4,850,883 tonnes (up 13.2 percent), 52.7 percent of the net increase, with Indonesia adding 1,464,607 (up 11.8 percent), Mozambique 1,277,502 (up 27.2 percent), Ghana 1,244,621 (up 18.5 percent), Ivory Coast 1,090,000 (up 26.0 percent), Angola 874,563 (up 23.0 percent) and Cameroon 848,726 (up 36.3 percent). Zambia moved the other way, falling 2,921,484 tonnes to zero, worth minus 31.7 percent of the net change; Uganda fell 698,728 (down 28.6 percent). Cuba's 562,670 tonnes left the comparison; Bhutan, Saudi Arabia and Vanuatu entered with 5,577 tonnes between them.

2022 to 2023: Up 4.2 Percent

The common total rose from 108,837,928 tonnes to 113,437,549, up 4,599,621 tonnes or 4.2 percent across 78 reporters, with none entering or leaving. DR Congo added 1,237,151 tonnes (up 3.1 percent), with Mozambique adding 885,853 (up 17.4 percent), Indonesia 722,200 (up 5.5 percent), Ivory Coast 690,000 (up 15.0 percent), Ghana 555,264 (up 7.5 percent) and Nigeria 500,000 (up 6.7 percent). Uganda fell 247,639 tonnes (down 12.4 percent) and Brazil 244,178 (down 5.9 percent).

What Does Fresh Cassava Cover?

The FAO item covers fresh cassava roots, not flour, tapioca or processed-product forms, which have separate articles; these series are not added together here. Food supply quantity captures what was available for human consumption during the reference year. The gram-per-day figure spreads that availability across the population on a daily basis.

Fresh Cassava Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

DR Congo had the largest 2023 listed fresh-cassava supply at 41,604,871 tonnes and the highest per-capita figure at 1,077 grams per person per day. The 2023 listed total was 113,437,549 tonnes across 78 reporters, up 8.8 percent on a common-reporter basis since 2019. These figures record food available for human consumption, not amounts actually eaten.

Methodology

Seventy-nine reporters form the universe here: every reporter with a value in any year from 2019 through 2023, tables showing reporters only. World, regional and China (aggregate) rows are out of scope, and China means the China reporter. Percentages use the earlier of the two endpoint years as base across reporters present in both; zero-base years get no percentage, and small-base percentages should be read with the base in mind.

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts food supply quantity, element 5141 in tonnes for totals and element 665 in grams per capita per day, tracks fresh cassava over 2019-2023. The measure counts availability for human consumption in the reference year rather than intake. Zero is a reported zero, blank is no report. The 2023 listed total of 113,437,549 tonnes sums the 78 reporters with a 2023 value, in tonnes as published. Frequently Asked Questions

Why does DR Congo dominate both lists?

DR Congo reported 41,604,871 tonnes against 1,077 grams a day — 36.7 percent of the listed total and the highest per-person figure by a distance. The figures describe the scale of the lead, not its causes.

What happened to Zambia?

Zambia reported 2,921,484 tonnes in 2019, then 2,828,425 in 2020 and 2,733,182 in 2021 before reaching zero in 2022 and 2023. The figures trace the fall to zero, not what caused it.

Is the growth broad or one-country?

Broad: Indonesia, Mozambique, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Angola and Cameroon added between 848,726 and 1,464,607 tonnes each, alongside DR Congo's 4,850,883. The figures record each gain without attributing causes.
