Groundnut Oil Consumption by Country
FAO Food Balances data record 3,468 thousand tonnes of listed groundnut oil food supply in 2023 across 111 reporters with reported values. China accounts for 1,042 thousand tonnes of that total, ahead of India at 663 thousand tonnes and Nigeria at 388 thousand tonnes. Guinea-Bissau records the highest per-capita food supply at 15.84 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values in individual years.
China leads the 2023 ranking at 1,042 thousand tonnes, 1.57 times India's 663 thousand tonnes. Guinea-Bissau tops the per-capita ranking at 15.84 kilograms per person per year from 34 thousand tonnes, ahead of Senegal at 7.95 kilograms. In 2023, China led listed groundnut oil food supply at 1,042 thousand tonnes, with India second at 663 thousand tonnes and Nigeria third at 388 thousand tonnes. Myanmar followed at 241 thousand tonnes and Senegal at 144 thousand tonnes. Guinea-Bissau's 15.84 kilograms per person per year lead the per-capita ranking, followed by Senegal at 7.95 kilograms. Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 111 reporters with data in both years fell from 3,581 thousand tonnes to 3,468 thousand tonnes, a decline of 113 thousand tonnes (3.2 percent), as India's 152-thousand-tonne fall outweighed gains in China, Myanmar and Algeria. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 22.3 percent, with India contributing 50.3 percent of the increase. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of groundnut oil actually eaten. China holds 1,042 thousand tonnes, or 30.0 percent of the 3,468-thousand-tonne listed total. India follows at 663 thousand tonnes (19.1 percent) and Nigeria at 388 thousand tonnes (11.2 percent), with Myanmar fourth at 241 thousand tonnes and Senegal fifth at 144 thousand tonnes. The top three reporters account for 60.4 percent of the listed total, while the top five account for 71.5 percent and the top ten account for 81.8 percent. India and China together hold nearly half of the listed total. Among the 111 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply decreased from 3,581 thousand tonnes to 3,468 thousand tonnes, a decline of 113 thousand tonnes (3.2 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 111 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. India fell 152 thousand tonnes (down 18.7 percent), Argentina fell 32 thousand tonnes (down 82.1 percent), the United States fell 14 thousand tonnes (down 20.0 percent) and Italy fell 7 thousand tonnes (down 17.9 percent), while China added 30 thousand tonnes (up 3.0 percent), Myanmar added 28 thousand tonnes (up 13.1 percent), Algeria added 18 thousand tonnes (up 66.7 percent) and Nigeria added 10 thousand tonnes (up 2.6 percent). For the 108 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply rose from 2,826 thousand tonnes to 3,456 thousand tonnes, a gain of 630 thousand tonnes (22.3 percent). The 2019 total includes 108 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 111; Denmark, Nauru and Poland entered with a combined 12 thousand tonnes. India added 317 thousand tonnes (up 91.6 percent), China added 200 thousand tonnes (up 23.8 percent), Myanmar added 56 thousand tonnes (up 30.3 percent), Algeria added 20 thousand tonnes (up 80.0 percent), Nigeria added 17 thousand tonnes (up 4.6 percent) and Senegal added 17 thousand tonnes (up 13.4 percent), while the United Arab Emirates fell 24 thousand tonnes (down 64.9 percent) and Italy fell 17 thousand tonnes (down 34.7 percent). India's two windows tell opposite stories: up 317 thousand tonnes since 2019, down 152 thousand tonnes in the last year alone, ending 2023 at 663 thousand tonnes. China and India together account for 82.1 percent of the five-year net increase. Per capita, Guinea-Bissau's 15.84 kilograms per person per year, based on 34 thousand tonnes of listed food supply, followed by Senegal at 7.95 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 0.73 kilograms. For FAO Food Balances, the groundnut oil figure used here covers groundnut oil recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of how much groundnut oil people actually consumed. Groundnuts used for other purposes sit outside this figure. The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population. In 2023, China had the largest listed groundnut oil food supply among the 111 reporters with reported values, at 1,042 thousand tonnes. India ranked second at 663 thousand tonnes, while Nigeria ranked third at 388 thousand tonnes. Guinea-Bissau had the highest per-capita groundnut oil food supply at 15.84 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of groundnut oil actually eaten. Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Groundnut oil from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer. The reporter universe for this item contains 112 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year. Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 3,468 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 111 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.Groundnut Oil Food Supply at a Glance

Groundnut Oil Consumption by Country: Quick Answer
Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did India's groundnut oil food supply swing so sharply?
The FAO Food Balances data show India at 346 thousand tonnes in 2019, up to 815 thousand tonnes in 2022 and back to 663 thousand tonnes in 2023. This dataset alone does not establish the cause of those movements; the five-year gain of 317 thousand tonnes accounts for 50.3 percent of the net increase.
Which countries have the highest per-capita groundnut oil food supply?
Guinea-Bissau recorded 15.84 kilograms per person in 2023, followed by Senegal at 7.95 kilograms and Guinea at 7.83 kilograms. China, first by total, recorded 0.73 kilograms per person.
Is groundnut oil food supply the same as groundnut oil eaten?
No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
