Mongolia remained the fourth-largest fresh or chilled horse meat producer in 2024, after losing 18,373 tonnes from 2023, while China lost 56,117 tonnes from 2020. The figures below reproduce FAO Crops and Livestock Products records for item Horse meat; fresh or chilled, 2020-2024, reporting production quantity in tonnes. The table lists 62 countries; 60 reported a 2024 quantity, and the 2024 annual listed total is 721,503 tonnes. The 2024 country list runs from the largest listed quantity to the smallest.
In 2024, China was the largest listed producer of fresh or chilled horse meat, with 180,716 tonnes, followed by Kazakhstan with 170,918 tonnes and Mexico with 70,664 tonnes. Mongolia ranked fourth with 61,158 tonnes. The 60 countries reporting a 2024 quantity produced a combined 721,503 tonnes, with China accounting for 25.0 percent of the listed total.
China and Kazakhstan were separated by 9,798 tonnes in 2024, with China's 180,716 tonnes only modestly ahead of Kazakhstan's 170,918 tonnes. Together, the two countries accounted for 48.7 percent of the listed total, while Mexico and Mongolia added 70,664 and 61,158 tonnes respectively. China was the largest fresh or chilled horse meat producer in the 2024 listed data with 180,716 tonnes, followed by Kazakhstan with 170,918 tonnes and Mexico with 70,664 tonnes. Mongolia ranked fourth with 61,158 tonnes. China holds 25.0 percent of the listed 2024 total. The top three together hold 58.5 percent of the 721,503-tonne listed total. From 2023 to 2024 the common reporter universe (60 countries with data in both years) moved from 746,699 tonnes to 721,503 tonnes, a change of -25,196 tonnes (-3.4 percent). The totals listed for each year were 748,629 tonnes (61 reporters) and 721,503 tonnes (60 reporters); 1 country reporting in 2023 (1,930 tonnes, Nicaragua) did not report in 2024, while no new reporters joined. Mongolia fell 18,373 tonnes (down 23.1 percent) and Kyrgyzstan 10,660 tonnes (down 35.2 percent), while Uruguay added 4,769 tonnes (up 87.0 percent). Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (60 countries with data in both years) fell from 811,960 tonnes to 721,503 tonnes, a change of -90,457 tonnes (-11.1 percent). The totals listed for each year were 813,778 tonnes (61 reporters) and 721,503 tonnes (60 reporters); 1 reporter present in 2020 (1,818 tonnes, Nicaragua) is absent in 2024, while no new reporters joined. China fell 56,117 tonnes (down 23.7 percent) and Mongolia 44,723 tonnes (down 42.2 percent), while Kazakhstan added 28,157 tonnes (up 19.7 percent). Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals sum FAO Crops and Livestock Products production quantity (Element 5510) for item Horse meat; fresh or chilled, 2020-2024. For fresh or chilled horse meat production, quantities below 1,000 tonnes retain two decimals and larger quantities are shown as whole tonnes. The 2024 fresh or chilled horse meat production ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities. In the fresh or chilled horse meat production data, zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means no quantity was reported. For fresh or chilled horse meat production changes, only countries with quantities in both endpoint years enter the arithmetic. Production quantities are reported to FAO by national statistical sources.
