Hydro Capacity by Country

Hydro capacity by country measures installed hydroelectric power plant capacity for each country, in gigawatts (GW). The series covers hydroelectric capacity, while pumped storage is reported separately. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 162 countries, with 159 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 1,229.52 GW in 2024, up from 1,216.95 GW in 2023.

Hydro Capacity by Country Map

China (377.26 GW) held nearly a third of world hydro capacity in 2024 — about 3.4 times Brazil (109.96 GW). Canada (84.14 GW), the United States (79.90 GW) and Russia (49.10 GW) completed the top five.

China accounted for about 30.7% of the world total in 2024. The top two together held about 39.6%, the top three about 46.5%, the top five about 57.0%, and the top ten about 69.9%.

China added the most hydro capacity in 2024

China recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, rising from 370.60 to 377.26 GW (+6.66 GW, about 1.8%). The world total rose from 1,216.95 to 1,229.52 GW (+12.57 GW, about 1.0%), so China alone accounted for about 53% of the world increase. The largest decline among reported pairs was Russia, falling from 50.57 to 49.10 GW (-1.48 GW, about 2.9%).

Hydro capacity changes in small increments

China (+1.8%), Canada (+1.2%), India (+0.9%) and Brazil (+0.1%) expanded while the United States (-0.1%) and Russia (-2.9%) edged down. Dams take years to build, so annual moves are small everywhere: no top-ten holder moved more than 2%. Russia's -2.9% was the steepest fall among larger holders.

Hydro capacity has grown 6.9% since 2019

Reported world values were 1,150.58 GW in 2019, 1,172.51 GW in 2020, 1,185.50 GW in 2021, 1,206.42 GW in 2022, 1,216.95 GW in 2023 and 1,229.52 GW in 2024. Capacity ended about 6.9% above the 2019 level with growth in every year.

Hydro remains the largest renewable capacity source

Hydroelectricity accounted for 1,229.52 GW of the 4,421.96 GW of renewable capacity reported worldwide in 2024, or about 27.8%. Non-hydro renewables accounted for the remaining 3,192.44 GW. Hydro therefore remains a major part of the global renewable power base even though its capacity has grown much more slowly than newer renewable technologies since 2019.

Methodology

The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent installed hydroelectric capacity reported for each year, in gigawatts (GW). Pumped storage is reported as a separate series. Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers hydro capacity only; other sources and generation are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which countries have the most hydro capacity?

China (377.26 GW) and Brazil (109.96 GW) had the largest hydro capacity in 2024, followed by Canada (84.14 GW), the United States (79.90 GW) and Russia (49.10 GW).

How much has hydro capacity grown since 2019?

World hydro capacity increased from 1,150.58 GW in 2019 to 1,229.52 GW in 2024, an increase of about 6.9%. Over the same period, non-hydro renewable capacity increased by about 135.8%.

Does pumped storage count here?

No. Pumped-storage hydro is reported as a separate series. This page covers conventional hydroelectric capacity only.

How should empty cells be read?

Empty means no reported value in the source. It is different from 0, which means the source reports zero.
