Mutton and Goat Meat Consumption by Country

In 2023, China held 5,724 thousand tonnes of listed mutton and goat meat food supply, nearly a third of a 17,690-thousand-tonne total spread across 176 reporters. India recorded the largest five-year increase in absolute terms, rising from 811 to 2,720 thousand tonnes. Mongolia recorded the highest per-capita figure at 69.40 kilograms per person per year. The series spans 2019 through 2023, although some reporters have missing values for individual years.

Mutton and Goat Meat Consumption

China's 5,724 thousand tonnes lead India's 2,720, but per capita the order reverses completely: Mongolia at 69.40 kilograms from 238 thousand tonnes, then Bahrain at 21.63 kilograms. Neither volume leader cracks the per-capita top five.

Mutton and Goat Meat Food Supply at a Glance

  • China had the largest listed mutton and goat meat food supply in 2023 at 5,724 thousand tonnes.
  • India ranked second at 2,720 thousand tonnes, followed by Pakistan at 787 thousand tonnes.
  • Mongolia had the highest per-capita food supply at 69.40 kilograms per person per year.
  • The 2023 listed total was 17,690 thousand tonnes across 176 reporters with reported values.
  • Among 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, listed mutton and goat meat food supply increased by 3,497 thousand tonnes, or 24.6 percent.
  • The FAO Food element measures food available for human consumption and is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten.

Key Takeaways

The two leaders swapped roles across the windows. In 2023 China leads India by 3,004 thousand tonnes, but since 2019 India added 1,909 thousand tonnes against China's 608. Türkiye, up 454.0 percent from 126 to 698 thousand tonnes, is the third engine of the period. Mongolia's 69.40 kilograms per person per year top the per-capita ranking from just 238 thousand tonnes.

Between 2022 and 2023, listed supply across the 176 reporters with data in both years rose by 605 thousand tonnes, or 3.5 percent. India, China, Türkiye and Ethiopia accounted for most of the largest increases, while the United States recorded the steepest fall. Since 2019, the common-reporter total has grown 24.6 percent, with India contributing 54.6 percent of the net increase. These figures represent food available for human consumption in the FAO Food Balances and should not be interpreted as the amount of mutton and goat meat actually eaten.

The 2023 table is led by China, whose listed food supply of mutton and goat meat reached 5,724 thousand tonnes. India followed with 2,720 thousand tonnes and Pakistan with 787 thousand tonnes. Türkiye and Nigeria completed the top five at 698 and 427 thousand tonnes, respectively.

China holds 32.4 percent of the 17,690-thousand-tonne listed total. The top three reporters accounted for 52.2 percent of the listed total, while the top five represented 58.5 percent and the top ten 66.9 percent. Myanmar records just 12 thousand tonnes in 2023 against 94 thousand tonnes in 2019.

India Adds 289 Thousand Tonnes as Supply Grows 3.5 Percent Between 2022 and 2023

Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 17,085 thousand tonnes to 17,690 thousand tonnes, a gain of 605 thousand tonnes (3.5 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. India added 289 thousand tonnes (up 11.9 percent), China added 168 thousand tonnes (up 3.0 percent), Türkiye added 97 thousand tonnes (up 16.1 percent), Ethiopia added 63 thousand tonnes (up 31.3 percent), Kenya added 28 thousand tonnes (up 36.8 percent), Saudi Arabia added 28 thousand tonnes (up 15.1 percent) and Australia added 21 thousand tonnes (up 8.1 percent), while the United States fell 41 thousand tonnes (down 17.7 percent).

The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 12 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. India added 1,909 thousand tonnes (up 235.4 percent), China added 608 thousand tonnes (up 11.9 percent), Türkiye added 572 thousand tonnes (up 454.0 percent), Syria added 83 thousand tonnes (up 65.4 percent), Saudi Arabia added 67 thousand tonnes (up 45.6 percent), Pakistan added 63 thousand tonnes (up 8.7 percent) and Uzbekistan added 57 thousand tonnes (up 29.4 percent), while Myanmar fell 82 thousand tonnes (down 87.2 percent).

India contributes 54.6 percent of the five-year net increase, followed by China at 17.4 percent and Türkiye at 16.4 percent. Per capita, Mongolia's 69.40 kilograms from 238 thousand tonnes lead Bahrain at 21.63 kilograms, while China, first by total, records 4.02 kilograms.

What Does the Mutton and Goat Meat Food Supply Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the figure used here is the FAO item Mutton and Goat Meat recorded under the Food element as available for human consumption. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year rather than a direct estimate of the amount of mutton and goat meat people actually ate. Sheep and goat cuts recorded under separate detailed items sit outside this aggregate figure.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Mutton and Goat Meat Consumption by Country: Quick Answer

In 2023, according to FAO Food Balances, China had the largest listed mutton and goat meat food supply among the 176 reporters with reported values, at 5,724 thousand tonnes. India ranked second at 2,720 thousand tonnes, while Pakistan ranked third at 787 thousand tonnes. Mongolia had the highest per-capita mutton and goat meat food supply at 69.40 kilograms per person per year. These FAO Food Balances figures represent food available for human consumption, not a direct measurement of mutton and goat meat actually eaten.

Methodology

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Mutton and Goat Meat from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the amount actually eaten, as food can be lost or wasted before it is consumed. No percentage change is shown where the base-year value is zero.

The reporter universe for this item contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.

Quantities of 1,000 thousand tonnes and above are shown as whole numbers; smaller quantities retain up to two decimals. FAO Food Balances primarily use official national statistics, with some data also estimated or imputed where applicable. The FAO dataset reports the Food element in thousand tonnes and food supply quantity in kilograms per capita per year. The 2023 listed total of 17,690 thousand tonnes is the sum of the 176 reporters with a reported 2023 value; it excludes aggregate rows and reporters without a 2023 value.

Frequently Asked Questions

How did India's mutton and goat meat food supply more than triple?

India rose from 811 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 2,720 thousand tonnes in 2023, an increase of 1,909 thousand tonnes (up 235.4 percent). That gain accounts for 54.6 percent of the 3,497-thousand-tonne increase across reporters with data in both years.

Why does Mongolia lead mutton and goat meat food supply per person?

Mongolia recorded 69.40 kilograms per person in 2023 from a listed food supply of 238 thousand tonnes. Bahrain followed at 21.63 kilograms per person, while China, first by total, recorded 4.02 kilograms.

Is the food supply of mutton and goat meat the same as meat eaten?

No. The FAO Food element measures the quantity available for human consumption in the food balance. It does not directly measure how much people actually ate, because food can be lost or wasted after it becomes available to consumers.
