Peanut Butter Consumption by Country
The United States lost nine-tenths of its peanut-butter supply in five years, leaving the Philippines first in 2023 by just 1,117 tonnes. The Philippines held 8,869 tonnes, 10.4 percent of the 85,381-tonne total. Chile came second and the United Kingdom third. Per person, Barbados led. All figures count food available for human consumption, not actual intake.
Peanut Butter Consumption by Country: Key Facts
- The Philippines had the highest peanut butter supply in 2023 at 8,869 tonnes, narrowly ahead of Chile at 7,752 tonnes.
- Barbados had the highest supply per person at 3.51 grams per person per day.
- Peanut butter supply across the 106 countries with a 2023 value totaled 85,381 tonnes.
- The United States recorded the largest five-year decline, falling by 10,393 tonnes from 2019 to 2023.
- These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount actually eaten.
France placed fourth at 6,874 tonnes and South Korea fifth at 5,525, with Germany sixth (5,090), the Netherlands seventh (4,096) and Taiwan eighth (3,921). Hong Kong (2,627) and Ireland (2,473) completed the top ten. The top five held 43.1 percent of the total, and the top ten 64.4 percent. Per person, Grenada (2.41) and Fiji (2.25) followed Barbados, with Suriname at 2.12. Across the 104 countries with values in both 2022 and 2023, supply fell 20.5 percent from 100,384 tonnes, a loss of 20,534 tonnes. The United States' 9,179-tonne fall and Saudi Arabia's 8,327 accounted for most of the net loss, while France shed 4,566 tonnes and Venezuela 1,391. Chile added 776 tonnes, Germany 730 and Ireland 721. One country left with 2 tonnes while two entered with 5,531. Among the 97 countries reporting in both 2019 and 2023, the total slipped 4.4 percent from 83,304 tonnes, a loss of 3,645 tonnes. The United States' 10,393-tonne fall made up 285.2 percent of that net loss, with Saudi Arabia down 9,296 tonnes. Shares above 100 percent arise because gains elsewhere offset part of the losses. The United Kingdom added 5,381 tonnes, nearly one and a half times the net change in reverse. Nine countries entered with 5,722 tonnes between them while nine left with 592. Barbados's 3.51 grams a day led the per-person table, ahead of Grenada at 2.41 and Fiji at 2.25. Suriname (2.12) and Vanuatu (1.99) followed, with the Bahamas sixth at 1.6 and French Polynesia seventh at 1.55. The Philippines, first by volume, managed only 0.21 grams, while Chile stood at 1.08. Ireland, tenth by volume, was the only volume top-ten country in the per-person top ten. This page follows the SUA item labelled Peanut butter and counts only its rows; World, regional and aggregate rows are not in the table. The annual listed supply total sums the countries with a 2023 value. Food here means supply available for people to eat in the reference year, not amounts eaten. The United States went from 18,100 tonnes in 2020 to 1,122 in 2023. Saudi Arabia's path ran from 12,337 tonnes in 2020 to zero in 2023. South Korea, by contrast, had no 2019 value and arrived at 5,525 tonnes, fifth place outright. For peanut butter, tonnage follows element 5141 and daily grams follow element 665 across 2019 to 2023. A change is measured from the earlier year; none is stated from a zero base. Only countries present in both compared years enter a change. A reported zero is not a blank, and blanks never stand in for zeros. The file holds 117 countries after removing World, regional and aggregate rows; 106 of them carry 2023 values. The numbers describe food available for human consumption. Source: FAO FAOSTAT, compiled by StatsGeo.Peanut Butter Supply Changes
