Largest Changes in Petroleum Production, 2019–2023

The United States recorded the largest increase between 2019 and 2023, rising from 783,892,303 to 874,105,820 tonnes (up 90,213,517). Iran added 52,600,000, from 161,700,000 to 214,300,000, Canada added 45,000,000, from 232,900,000 to 277,900,000, and Brazil added 30,547,070, from 149,550,768 to 180,097,838.

Nigeria recorded the largest decline, falling from 100,900,000 tonnes in 2019 to 73,900,000 in 2023 (down 27,000,000). Saudi Arabia fell from 556,600,000 to 531,700,000 (down 24,900,000), Iraq from 234,200,000 to 213,000,000 (down 21,200,000), Russia from 561,000,000 to 541,700,000 (down 19,300,000), and the United Kingdom from 52,489,000 to 33,446,000 (down 19,043,000).

World output moved little over the period, from 4,470,895,206 tonnes in 2019 to 4,511,257,854 in 2023 (up 0.9 percent). The strong growth in US output offset declines among the major Middle East and African producers. Colombia declined steadily from 46,700,000 to 40,900,000 tonnes, and Angola from 69,100,000 to 55,800,000, while Netherlands output fell from 747,000 to 320,000 tonnes, and Norway rose modestly from 85,386,000 to 90,808,000.

Methodology

The statistics are based on Our World in Data, which compiles national petroleum production figures from the BGS World Mineral Statistics, with major processing by Our World in Data. The figures include crude oil, shale oil, oil sands, and natural gas liquids, in line with the definitions used in the underlying sources. The source data run through 2023, which is the main comparison year. In the table, a zero reflects no production, while an empty cell means that no value was reported.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which country produces the most petroleum?

The United States produced the most petroleum in 2023 with 874,105,820 tonnes, followed by Russia (541,700,000) and Saudi Arabia (531,700,000).

How many countries are included in the dataset?

The table lists 100 countries that record petroleum production, based on Our World in Data figures compiled from BGS sources.

What does this indicator measure?

It measures national petroleum production in tonnes, including crude oil, shale oil, oil sands, and natural gas liquids, based on the definitions used in the underlying sources.

Which country produces the least petroleum?

Among the countries with 2023 data, Bangladesh, Slovenia, and South Africa reported zero production, and Spain recorded the smallest positive output at 606 tonnes.

Why do the data stop at 2023?

The source data run through 2023, which is the main comparison year.
