Primary Energy Petroleum Production by Country
Primary energy from petroleum and other liquids by country measures the energy content of petroleum and other liquids produced for each country, in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. The measure expresses production in energy terms rather than physical barrel volumes or consumption. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 99 countries, with 99 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 194.3876 quad Btu in 2024, up from 193.6876 quad Btu in 2023.
The United States (36.7774 quad Btu) led in 2024, just ahead of Saudi Arabia (22.3736 quad Btu) and Russia (22.2205 quad Btu) in a close race for second. Canada (11.7736 quad Btu) and Iran (9.5925 quad Btu) completed the top five. Empty means no reported value, not zero. The United States accounted for about 18.9% of the world total in 2024, about 1.6 times Saudi Arabia. The top two together held about 30.4%, the top three about 41.9%, the top five about 52.9%, and the top ten about 74.0%. The United States recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, rising from 35.3566 to 36.7774 quad Btu (+1.4208 quad Btu, about 4.0%). The world total rose from 193.6876 to 194.3876 quad Btu (+0.7000 quad Btu, about 0.4%) — the United States alone added twice the net world increase, with declines elsewhere offsetting the rest. The largest decline among reported pairs was Saudi Arabia, falling from 23.4645 to 22.3736 quad Btu (-1.0909 quad Btu, about 4.6%). The top three pulled in different directions: the United States (+4.0%) grew while Saudi Arabia (-4.6%) and Russia (-3.3%) retreated. Iran (+12.8%) and Canada (+4.4%) both increased without disturbing the order. With two of the top three declining, the United States provided the largest boost, while gains among other producers were needed to push the world total higher. Reported world values were 192.7331 quad Btu in 2019, 179.7353 quad Btu in 2020, 181.9357 quad Btu in 2021, 190.7680 quad Btu in 2022, 193.6876 quad Btu in 2023 and 194.3876 quad Btu in 2024. After the sharp drop in 2020, production recovered steadily and by 2024 had only slightly exceeded its 2019 level. Petroleum is the largest primary source by energy (194.3876 quad Btu against coal's 181.5906), but production is much less concentrated at the top: the leader holds 18.9% here versus 52.1% in coal. The ranking reflects energy produced, not barrels pumped or fuel burned. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual primary energy production from petroleum and other liquids in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers petroleum energy production only and does not include other sources or consumption, which are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which countries produce the most petroleum energy?
The United States (36.7774 quad Btu), Saudi Arabia (22.3736 quad Btu) and Russia (22.2205 quad Btu) reported the largest 2024 values, followed by Canada (11.7736 quad Btu) and Iran (9.5925 quad Btu).
Why did the world barely grow in 2024?
The world total rose just 0.7000 quad Btu (about 0.4%) as the United States added 1.4208 quad Btu while declines including Saudi Arabia’s 1.0909-quad-Btu drop offset much of the increase.
Is Saudi Arabia still second?
In 2024, yes, but narrowly: 22.3736 quad Btu against Russia's 22.2205. Saudi Arabia fell 4.6% while Russia fell 3.3%.
Is this the same as crude oil production?
No. This page measures petroleum and other liquids in energy terms; crude oil production in barrels per day is reported as a separate series.
