Pig Fat, Rendered Consumption by Country

China recorded the largest listed supply of rendered pig fat in 2023, at 1,207,822 tonnes, or about 26.7 percent of the listed total. Brazil ranked second at 669,781 tonnes, followed by the United States at 434,334 tonnes. Hungary led the per-person ranking at 23.46 grams a day. The listed 2023 total was 4,521,387 tonnes, and 120 of the 126 country rows reported a value for that year. These figures measure food available for human consumption, not the amount people actually ate.

China, Brazil and the United States together held about 51.1 percent of the listed 2023 total, with China alone accounting for roughly 26.7 percent, while Russia placed fourth at 350,300 tonnes. Total tonnage shows the scale of the recorded national supply, while grams per person per day gives a population-adjusted comparison, so the two rankings can differ.

• Belgium recorded the largest listed decline by volume in the latest year.
• Slovakia lost about a fifth of its 2022 level.
• China added more in volume than any other listed country.
• The United States added 107,076 tonnes, or 32.7 percent, reaching 434,334 tonnes in 2023.

Belgium's Rendered Pig Fat Supply Falls

Belgium recorded the largest listed decline by volume from 2022 to 2023, losing 46,855 tonnes, down 45.9 percent to 55,142 tonnes. Slovakia lost 10,085 tonnes, down 21.7 percent, and Poland shed 8,058 tonnes, down 5.0 percent. China added 137,822 tonnes, up 12.9 percent, the United States added 107,076 tonnes, up 32.7 percent, and Russia added 10,405 tonnes, up 3.1 percent. The 119 countries with a value in both years rose from 4,304,550 tonnes to 4,521,387 tonnes, up 216,837 tonnes, or 5.0 percent, with Paraguay the only arrival at 0.01 tonnes and no departures.

The United States Records the Largest Five-Year Gain

Between 2019 and 2023, the 116 countries with a value in both years rose from 4,503,689 tonnes by 17,698 tonnes, or 0.4 percent. The United States added the most, at 257,754 tonnes, up 146.0 percent, while Brazil added 153,204 tonnes, up 29.7 percent, and Argentina added 18,387 tonnes, up 20.7 percent. China lost 194,072 tonnes, down 13.8 percent, Russia shed 110,836 tonnes, down 24.0 percent, and Germany gave up 42,434 tonnes, down 10.8 percent. Five countries, including Cuba with 15,790 tonnes in 2019, have no 2023 value and therefore sit outside this comparison, while Mongolia, Paraguay, Saudi Arabia and Timor-Leste entered it with near-zero 2023 values. No country that reported both endpoints dropped out of the set.

Hungary Leads Per-Person Supply

Hungary recorded the highest listed supply per person in 2023, at 23.46 grams a day, ahead of Austria at 20.17 grams in second and Slovakia at 18.05 grams in third. Latvia sat fourth at 14.22 grams, with Belgium at 12.90 grams and Czechia at 12.89 grams. China, first by volume, ranked forty-third per person at 2.33 grams. Hungary led the per-person ranking despite China's much larger total supply, illustrating how national tonnage and per-capita figures can produce very different rankings.

What the Data Measures

Pig fat, rendered, available for human consumption is recorded in tonnes and in grams per person per day for each reporting country over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum reporting countries only. Total tonnage and the per-person measure describe different aspects of the same recorded supply, and neither one shows how much people actually ate.

Fifteen countries reported zero in 2023, including Georgia, which fell from 25.52 tonnes in 2022, and Liberia, Rwanda, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia and Timor-Leste, which ended the year at zero after very small 2022 values. A reported zero is a recorded value and a blank cell is missing data, so a zero does not by itself explain what happened in a country.

Methodology

The source is FAOSTAT Supply Utilization Accounts. Element 5141 reports food supply quantity in tonnes and element 665 reports it in grams per capita per day, for pig fat, rendered, over 2019-2023. Annual totals sum country records with reported values, excluding regional and aggregate records. Of the 126 country rows, 120 reported a value in 2023 and 105 of those were above zero. Comparisons between two years use only countries with values at both endpoints, which gives 119 countries for 2022-2023 and 116 for 2019-2023, and the country count and both totals come from that shared set. Percentage changes use the earlier year as the base and are not calculated when that base is zero. Reported zeros are kept as values, blank cells are treated as missing, and values under 1,000 tonnes are shown to two decimals.
