Primary Energy Coal Consumption by Country
Coal consumption as a primary energy source measures the energy content of coal consumed in each country, expressed in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. The measure reflects coal consumed within each country, regardless of whether the coal was produced domestically or imported. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 138 countries, with 138 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 179.6540 quad Btu in 2024, up from 175.1026 quad Btu in 2023.
China (105.2976 quad Btu) accounted for well over half of global coal consumption in 2024, consuming nearly five times as much as India (21.8041 quad Btu). The United States (7.9122 quad Btu), Indonesia (5.9859 quad Btu) and Russia (5.6928 quad Btu) completed the top five. Empty means no reported value, not zero. China accounted for about 58.6% of the world total in 2024. The top two together held about 70.8%, the top three about 75.2%, the top five about 81.7%, and the top ten about 89.7%. Only about one-tenth of reported consumption came from countries outside the top ten. China recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, rising from 101.3664 to 105.2976 quad Btu (+3.9312 quad Btu, about 3.9%). The world total rose from 175.1026 to 179.6540 quad Btu (+4.5514 quad Btu, about 2.6%), so China alone accounted for about 86% of the world increase. The largest decline among reported pairs was the United States, falling from 8.1708 to 7.9122 quad Btu (-0.2586 quad Btu, about 3.2%). China (+3.9%), India (+2.9%), Indonesia (+10.3%) and Russia (+12.2%) all increased their coal consumption, while the United States declined by 3.2%. Russia recorded the fastest percentage growth among the top five, whereas China contributed the largest absolute increase. Reported world values were 168.7005 quad Btu in 2019, 162.9169 quad Btu in 2020, 168.1373 quad Btu in 2021, 169.9660 quad Btu in 2022, 175.1026 quad Btu in 2023 and 179.6540 quad Btu in 2024. Consumption ended about 6.5% above the 2019 level, with 2024 marking the highest value in the six-year series. The leading coal consumers and producers overlap, but their rankings are not identical. China consumed 105.2976 quad Btu against coal production of 94.5603, while the United States produced 10.5788 and consumed 7.9122. The comparison highlights the difference between coal consumed within a country and coal produced there; the ranking on this page is based on consumption. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual primary energy consumption from coal in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers coal energy consumption only; other energy sources and production are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which countries consume the most coal energy?
China (105.2976 quad Btu) and India (21.8041 quad Btu) had the highest 2024 consumption values, followed by the United States (7.9122 quad Btu), Indonesia (5.9859 quad Btu) and Russia (5.6928 quad Btu).
How much did world coal consumption change in 2024?
World coal consumption increased by 4.5514 quad Btu, or about 2.6%, from 2023 to 2024. China accounted for about 86% of that increase, adding 3.9312 quad Btu.
Does China consume more than it produces?
In 2024, yes: China consumed 105.2976 quad Btu against production of 94.5603. The United States shows the reverse, producing 10.5788 and consuming 7.9122.
Is this measured in tons?
No. This page measures energy content in quad Btu, not mass. Rankings can differ from tonnage-based pages because coal grades vary in heat content.
