Primary Energy Consumption by Country
Primary energy consumption by country measures energy consumption at the point where energy is first accounted for in the energy balance, before transformation into secondary or tertiary forms, in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu) per year. It represents the demand side of the energy balance rather than primary energy production. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. The table covers 216 countries, with 216 reported 2024 values, and includes data from 2019 to 2024. The world total stood at 606.0370 quad Btu in 2024, up from 592.0332 quad Btu in 2023.
China (170.5793 quad Btu) consumed nearly twice as much primary energy as the United States (94.5557 quad Btu) in 2024. India (37.4903 quad Btu), Russia (34.2841 quad Btu) and Japan (15.6644 quad Btu) completed the top five. Empty means no reported value, not zero. China accounted for about 28.2% of the world total in 2024, consuming about 1.8 times as much as the United States. The top two together held about 43.8%, the top three about 49.9%, the top five about 58.2%, and the top ten about 68.5%. China recorded the largest increase in absolute terms, rising from 162.6830 to 170.5793 quad Btu (+7.8963 quad Btu, about 4.9%). The world total rose from 592.0332 to 606.0370 quad Btu (+14.0038 quad Btu, about 2.4%), so China alone accounted for about 56% of the world increase. The largest decline among reported pairs was Japan, falling from 16.1160 to 15.6644 quad Btu (-0.4516 quad Btu, about 2.8%). Every top-five consumer except Japan grew: China (+4.9%), Russia (+5.2%), India (+1.9%) and the United States (+0.9%). Russia grew the fastest in percentage terms among the top five. Japan's -2.8% was the only decline in the top five and the largest absolute fall in the table. Reported world values were 570.5483 quad Btu in 2019, 546.5006 quad Btu in 2020, 573.0386 quad Btu in 2021, 579.3161 quad Btu in 2022, 592.0332 quad Btu in 2023 and 606.0370 quad Btu in 2024. Consumption ended about 6.2% above the 2019 level. The series shows how global consumption moved over the six-year period, but the figures themselves do not attribute those changes to particular factors. Consumers and producers rank differently: China consumed 170.5793 quad Btu against production of 130.7573, while the United States consumed 94.5557 against production of 103.5483. The consumption top ten (68.5%) is slightly less concentrated than the production top ten (72.1%). The ranking therefore reflects energy consumption rather than domestic energy production. The statistics are based on the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) International Energy Statistics. Values represent annual primary energy consumption in quadrillion British thermal units (quad Btu). Where no value is available, the cell is left empty. A value of 0 indicates that the source reports zero. The sum of the countries listed on this page may not equal the reported world total because the country-level data presented here do not necessarily represent the complete set of values used for the world total. This page covers total primary energy consumption only; individual energy sources such as coal, natural gas and nuclear are reported separately in the source.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is primary energy consumption?
Primary energy consumption measures energy at the point where it is first accounted for in the energy balance, before transformation into secondary or tertiary forms. The series includes coal, natural gas, petroleum and other liquids, nuclear, and renewables and other sources.
Which countries consume the most primary energy?
China (170.5793 quad Btu) and the United States (94.5557 quad Btu) reported the largest 2024 values, followed by India (37.4903 quad Btu), Russia (34.2841 quad Btu) and Japan (15.6644 quad Btu).
Why did China dominate the 2024 increase?
China rose 7.8963 quad Btu (about 4.9%), about 56% of the world increase of 14.0038. The data shows the size of the increase, but it does not attribute it to specific factors.
How does consumption compare with production?
Consumption can be higher or lower than domestic production. China consumed 170.5793 quad Btu against production of 130.7573, while the United States consumed 94.5557 against production of 103.5483.
