Rice Exports by Country
Cambodia alone shipped more rice abroad in 2024 than the next twenty exporters combined, taking a lead held by the United States just a year earlier. This page tracks item Rice as reported in the FAO Detailed Trade Matrix, pairing export quantity in tonnes with export value in current US dollars for each reporter. The table spans 2020-2024 and lists 124 countries, of which 76 reported a 2024 quantity; their listed 2024 quantities total about 7.9 million tonnes. The default ranking uses 2024 listed quantities from largest to smallest.
Cambodia was the largest rice exporter in the 2024 listed data with 5,011,851 tonnes, ahead of the United States with 1,882,314 tonnes. Brazil ranked third with 392,456 tonnes, followed by India (354,677 tonnes), Pakistan (41,696 tonnes), Paraguay (40,444 tonnes) and China (36,161 tonnes). Greece (32,378 tonnes), Spain (24,837 tonnes) and Bulgaria (24,823 tonnes) complete the top ten. Cambodia also led on export value at 1,398,244,000 US dollars, ahead of the United States (820,817,000) and Brazil (176,598,000). The defining event of 2024 was Cambodia's single-year surge: its exports rose by 3,887,068 tonnes (from 1,124,783 to 5,011,851 tonnes, up 345.6 percent), accounting for about 94 percent of the common-universe gain between 2023 and 2024. No other country added even one-fifth as much in absolute terms; the second-largest gain, by the United States (+731,494 tonnes), was less than one-fifth of Cambodia's. Two countries hold 87.1 percent of the listed 2024 total between them, the top three 92.1 percent and the top ten 99.1 percent — only 0.9 percent of reported trade sits outside the top ten. Cambodia exported about 2.66 times as much as the United States. Quantity and value rankings diverge in one sharp exception at the top: China ranks seventh by quantity (36,161 tonnes) but fourth by value (141,678,000 US dollars), a reported trade value of about 3,918 dollars per tonne against Cambodia's 279 — a unit-value divergence within the reported trade, not a price observation. Asian reporters include Cambodia, India, Pakistan and China; the Americas supply the second tier through the United States, Brazil, Paraguay and Guyana (7,154 tonnes); Europe's exporters — Greece, Spain, Bulgaria, Italy (13,591 tonnes) and France (11,063 tonnes) — each ship less than one-hundredth of Cambodia's volume. Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (68 countries with data in both years) rose from 3,764,328 tonnes to 7,911,576 tonnes, a change of 4,147,248 tonnes (110.2 percent). The totals listed for each year were 4,064,614 tonnes (92 reporters) and 7,912,779 tonnes (76 reporters); 24 countries reporting in 2023 (about 0.30 million tonnes) did not report in 2024. Behind Cambodia, the United States added 731,494 tonnes (up 63.6 percent). Pakistan added 38,598 tonnes (from 3,098 to 41,696 tonnes, up 1,245.9 percent) from a small base, while China added 12,350 tonnes (up 51.9 percent) and Greece 10,900 tonnes (up 50.7 percent). The sharpest absolute fall came from Brazil, down 415,718 tonnes (from 808,174 to 392,456 tonnes, down 51.4 percent), followed by India with 90,319 tonnes (down 20.3 percent). Bulgaria fell 16,092 tonnes (down 39.3 percent) and Guyana 12,977 tonnes (down 64.5 percent). Tanzania's 90.2 percent fall (from 8,197 to 803 tonnes) looks dramatic in percentage terms but amounts to 7,394 tonnes in absolute terms. Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (67 countries with data in both years) rose from 2,890,476 tonnes to 7,909,467 tonnes, a change of 5,018,991 tonnes (173.6 percent). The totals listed for each year were 3,140,556 tonnes (103 reporters) and 7,912,779 tonnes (76 reporters); 36 countries reporting in 2020 (about 0.25 million tonnes combined) did not report in 2024. Cambodia accounts for practically the entire common-universe gain, rising from just 84 tonnes in 2020 to 5,011,851 tonnes in 2024. The United States added 509,088 tonnes (up 37.1 percent), the only other six-figure absolute gain in the dataset. Paraguay recorded the largest absolute decline, falling 208,811 tonnes (from 249,255 to 40,444 tonnes, down 83.8 percent), followed by Brazil with 126,040 tonnes (down 24.3 percent) and Guyana with 86,716 tonnes (down 92.4 percent). India fell 59,735 tonnes (down 14.4 percent). These statistics aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows into annual reporter totals for item Rice, covering export quantity and export value for 2020-2024. Quantities appear in tonnes as rounded display values (below 1,000 tonnes to two decimals, 1,000 tonnes and above as integers); values appear in full current US dollars and are not adjusted for inflation. Ranking and shares use 2024 listed quantities. A reported zero denotes a nil or negligible flow, while an empty cell means nothing was reported for that country and year. Changes between two years are calculated only for countries with reported quantities in both years; countries missing a quantity in either year are excluded from the change calculation. The matrix is built from reported flows and may incorporate partner data where reports are missing, plus additions related to food aid; bilateral flows are not fully reconciled, so a flow reported as an export by one country may differ from the mirror import reported by its partner.Rice Exports by Country in 2024

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Cambodia's 63.3 percent share mean?
It means Cambodia reported 5,011,851 of the 7,912,779 tonnes in the 2024 listed data. The share describes this dataset's 76 reporting countries, not the world rice market; countries that did not report for 2024 are outside both the total and the ranking.
Does this page cover all international rice trade?
No. It covers FAO item Rice as reported by each country. Paddy traded on a milled-equivalent basis is a separate item (Rice, paddy (rice milled equivalent)) with its own table, so the two are never added together.
Why did the reporter count fall from 92 to 76 while the total nearly doubled?
Because totals and reporter counts move independently: each year's total comes only from that year's reporters. Between 2023 and 2024 the common universe of 68 countries grew 110.2 percent on the strength of Cambodia, while 24 small 2023 reporters (about 0.30 million tonnes combined) did not report in 2024.
Why is this not a rice production ranking?
The page records reported rice exports, not output from farms or mills. It also excludes domestic consumption, stocks, imports and the separate paddy-on-a-milled-equivalent item, so export rank cannot identify the largest producer or consumer.
