Rice Imports by Country
Mexico and five Central American countries together imported 1,549,319 tonnes in 2024, putting more than three-quarters of the listed 2024 quantity in six countries. This page follows item Rice in the FAO Detailed Trade Matrix, with import quantity in tonnes beside import value in current US dollars for every reporter. The 2020-2024 table lists 158 countries; 112 reported a 2024 quantity, and their listed 2024 quantities total about 2.03 million tonnes. The ranking below orders 2024 listed quantities from largest to smallest.
Mexico was the largest rice importer in the 2024 listed data with 661,140 tonnes, followed by Costa Rica with 294,834 tonnes and Honduras with 241,533 tonnes. Guatemala ranked fourth with 160,704 tonnes, ahead of Colombia (156,926 tonnes), Panama (120,076 tonnes), El Salvador (71,032 tonnes), Türkiye (54,296 tonnes), Portugal (35,323 tonnes) and the Philippines (25,527 tonnes). Mexico also led on import value at 296,723,000 US dollars, followed by Costa Rica (155,677,000) and Honduras (109,092,000). The headline totals mislead at first glance: the totals listed for each year were 2,960,077 tonnes (140 reporters) and 2,026,316 tonnes (112 reporters), suggesting a collapse of nearly one-third. The common reporter universe (106 countries with data in both years) tells the opposite story, rising from 1,762,503 tonnes to 2,025,618 tonnes, a change of 263,115 tonnes (14.9 percent). The gap comes from 34 countries reporting in 2023 (about 1.20 million tonnes combined) that did not report in 2024 — missing reports, not vanished trade. Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama and El Salvador together imported 1,549,319 tonnes in 2024, or 76.5 percent of the listed total. Colombia (156,926 tonnes) leads South American buyers, followed at distance by Brazil (22,243 tonnes). Europe's buyers are small and scattered: Portugal, Italy (25,420 tonnes), Spain (23,121 tonnes) and the Netherlands among them, none above 36,000 tonnes. Türkiye, the largest buyer outside the Americas, took 54,296 tonnes (2.7 percent). Within the growing common universe, Mexico added 215,479 tonnes (from 445,661 to 661,140 tonnes, up 48.4 percent), Honduras 68,627 tonnes (up 39.7 percent) and Guatemala 40,532 tonnes (up 33.7 percent). Portugal added 13,271 tonnes (up 60.2 percent) and Spain 11,306 tonnes (up 95.7 percent), both from small bases. Mozambique rose from 12.44 tonnes to 21,345 tonnes; no percentage is published for a move from such a base. Panama recorded the sharpest absolute fall, down 71,096 tonnes (from 191,172 to 120,076 tonnes, down 37.2 percent), followed by Switzerland with 31,863 tonnes (down 92.7 percent) and El Salvador with 23,197 tonnes (down 24.6 percent). Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (108 countries with data in both years) fell from 2,333,836 tonnes to 2,025,737 tonnes, a change of -308,099 tonnes (-13.2 percent). The totals listed for each year were 3,057,084 tonnes (145 reporters) and 2,026,316 tonnes (112 reporters); 37 countries reporting in 2020 (about 0.72 million tonnes combined) did not report in 2024. Costa Rica added 110,325 tonnes (up 59.8 percent) and Honduras 94,160 tonnes (up 63.9 percent). Brazil recorded the steepest absolute retreat, down 222,561 tonnes (from 244,804 to 22,243 tonnes, down 90.9 percent), followed by Mexico with 127,483 tonnes (down 16.2 percent) and Türkiye with 125,198 tonnes (down 69.8 percent). China shrank from 27,311 tonnes to 0.13 tonnes — a reported near-zero flow, distinct from a missing report. FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral records are summed here into yearly reporter totals for item Rice, 2020-2024, for import quantity and import value. Displayed quantities round below 1,000 tonnes to two decimals and to whole tonnes at or above 1,000; import values are converted from FAOSTAT's 1,000-US-dollar unit to full current US dollars and are not adjusted for inflation. Shares and the ranking rest on 2024 listed quantities. Zero means a reported nil or negligible flow; an empty cell means nothing was reported, and the two are never exchanged. Year-to-year change uses only countries reporting quantities in both years, with entering and exiting reporters quantified apart. Partner records may fill gaps and food-aid flows may be added, and bilateral pairs are not fully reconciled, so an export declaration and its mirror import can differ.Rice Imports by Country in 2024

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the Philippines rank far higher by value than by quantity?
The Philippines placed tenth by 2024 quantity (25,527 tonnes) but fourth by import value (97,263,000 US dollars), against Mexico's 661,140 tonnes and 296,723,000 dollars — about 3,810 dollars per tonne versus 449. The gap reflects different unit values in the reported trade, never a price claim.
Can reported imports shrink to almost nothing?
Yes. China reported 27,311 tonnes for 2020 and 0.13 tonnes for 2024 — a reported trickle, not a gap in reporting. A blank cell would instead mean nothing was reported for that year.
Why is no percentage given for Mozambique's rise?
Mozambique moved from 12.44 tonnes in 2023 to 21,345 tonnes in 2024. A percentage off a 12-tonne base would run into six digits while describing only 21,333 tonnes, so the move is reported in absolute terms with its base shown.
Does this table measure a country's total rice demand?
No. It covers reported rice imports only. Domestic harvests, stocks, consumption, exports and the separate paddy-on-a-milled-equivalent item are outside the ranking, so imports alone cannot measure total demand.
