The top three reporters hold 30.1 percent of the listed total, the top five 39.8 percent and the top ten 54.3 percent. Sugar is reported almost everywhere, so the ranking spreads across many reporters.

China Falls 889 Thousand Tonnes as Supply Edges Up 0.9 Percent Between 2022 and 2023

Among the 176 reporters with data in both 2022 and 2023, the listed food supply increased from 149,933 thousand tonnes to 151,350 thousand tonnes, a gain of 1,417 thousand tonnes (0.9 percent). The 2022 and 2023 listed totals come from the same 176 reporters, with no reporter entering or leaving the comparison. China fell 889 thousand tonnes (down 8.7 percent), the largest movement in either direction, while Pakistan added 665 thousand tonnes (up 11.7 percent), the United Kingdom added 339 thousand tonnes (up 20.1 percent), the Philippines added 330 thousand tonnes (up 13.3 percent), Mexico added 221 thousand tonnes (up 5.1 percent) and Morocco added 221 thousand tonnes (up 18.6 percent). Germany fell 306 thousand tonnes (down 10.0 percent) and France fell 260 thousand tonnes (down 10.6 percent).

India's 3,464-Thousand-Tonne Decline Pulls Supply Down 1.5 Percent Since 2019

For the 176 reporters with data in both 2019 and 2023, the listed food supply fell from 153,711 thousand tonnes to 151,350 thousand tonnes, a decline of 2,361 thousand tonnes (1.5 percent). The 2019 total includes 177 reporters with reported values, while the 2023 total includes 176; Cuba, with 526 thousand tonnes in 2019, had no reported 2023 value. India fell 3,464 thousand tonnes (down 12.2 percent), while Brazil fell 997 thousand tonnes (down 12.0 percent), China fell 889 thousand tonnes (down 8.7 percent), Egypt fell 375 thousand tonnes (down 13.8 percent) and Nigeria fell 356 thousand tonnes (down 18.0 percent). These declines were partly offset by gains in Indonesia, which added 601 thousand tonnes (up 8.9 percent), the United States, which added 466 thousand tonnes (up 4.2 percent), and Poland, which added 378 thousand tonnes (up 23.1 percent).

India's 24,891 thousand tonnes make it the clear volume leader, but the per-capita ranking looks different. Belgium records 53.33 kilograms per person per year and Poland 51.89 kilograms, compared with 17.31 kilograms in India. This difference shows why total food supply and per-capita food supply provide different views of the same dataset.

What Does Sugar Consumption Measure?

For FAO Food Balances, the sugar figure used here is expressed in raw equivalent terms, converting refined and other sugars to a common basis, and recorded under the Food element. It represents food available for human consumption during the reference year, rather than a direct estimate of how much sugar people actually consumed. Sugar contained in other processed foods or products recorded under separate items is not necessarily included in this figure.

The per-capita figure expresses the same food supply on a population basis, in kilograms per person per year. A country's total quantity and per-capita value therefore answer different questions: total quantity shows the size of the listed food supply, while the per-capita measure adjusts it for population.

Percentage changes use the corresponding value in the earlier year as the base. Yearly totals use FAO Food Balances food quantity (Element 5142, thousand tonnes), while the per-capita figures use food supply quantity (Element 645, kg/capita/year) for Sugar (Raw Equivalent) from 2019 through 2023. The Food element represents the quantity available for human consumption during the reference period. It is not a direct measure of the quantity actually eaten, as additional losses or waste may occur after food reaches the consumer.

The reporter universe contains 177 reporters. The tables list reporters only; aggregate rows such as World, regions and China (aggregate) are excluded, while China figures refer to the China reporter. For year-to-year comparisons, only reporters with values in both endpoint years are included in the arithmetic. A zero indicates a displayed value of zero, while an empty cell indicates that no value is available for that reporter and year.
