Between 2019 and 2023, the 167 countries present in both years grew from 80,972,985 tonnes to 84,507,174 tonnes, up 3,534,189 tonnes, or 4.4 percent. China added 2,307,824 tonnes, up 4.5 percent, accounting for 65.3 percent of the net gain. India added 1,038,491 tonnes, up 46.1 percent. Pakistan added 852,058 tonnes, up 163.2 percent. Iran lost 430,681 tonnes, down 29.6 percent. Brazil lost 419,373 tonnes, down 24.2 percent. Egypt shed 384,610 tonnes, down 30.3 percent. Türkiye gave up 371,405 tonnes, down 21.4 percent, and Morocco 276,207 tonnes, down 60.7 percent. One country left with 42,490 tonnes; the comparison drops Cuba's 2019 value while no country entered at the 2023 endpoint.

Senegal Leads Watermelon Supply per Person

Senegal's 202.38 grams a day stood far above Tajikistan's 144.18 in second and the Dominican Republic's 140.78 in third. Albania and Turkmenistan followed near 140 grams. Algeria sat at 136.28 grams. China, first by volume, ranked seventh per person at 103.09 grams. China ranked first by total supply, while Senegal ranked first on a per-person basis.

Methodology

FAO Supply Utilization Accounts label tonnage for human consumption as element 5141 and daily grams per person as element 665, shown for watermelons over 2019-2023. Percentages use the earlier year as the base, and no percentage is calculated when that base is zero. The dataset contains 172 reporting countries after aggregates are excluded, 171 with 2023 values. Only countries with values at both endpoints enter comparisons. The 2023 listed total of 84,509,151 tonnes is the sum of every country with a 2023 value. Reported zero is kept apart from blank, and under-1,000 values keep two decimals.
