Wheat Exports by Country
The figures below combine wheat export quantities in tonnes with export values in US dollars from the FAO Detailed Trade Matrix. The table covers 2020 to 2024 and contains 133 countries, including 87 with a reported 2024 quantity. The listed 2024 quantities total 167.4 million tonnes, and the ranking is ordered from largest to smallest.
Canada recorded the largest wheat exports in the 2024 listed data with 25,547,616 tonnes, just ahead of the United States with 21,803,269 tonnes. Ukraine followed with 20,664,820 tonnes and Australia with 19,678,652 tonnes, so four countries each exported more than 19 million tonnes. France ranked fifth with 15,065,615 tonnes, ahead of Romania (7,458,724 tonnes), Germany (7,018,937 tonnes), Argentina (6,647,031 tonnes), Kazakhstan (5,906,689 tonnes) and Poland (5,039,260 tonnes). Canada also led on export value at 7,289,958,000 US dollars, followed by the United States (5,971,363,000) and Australia (5,566,533,000). Exports are concentrated among the leading countries, with Canada accounting for 15.3 percent of the listed 2024 total. Yet the lead is narrow at the very top: Canada exported only about 1.17 times as much as the United States. Beyond the top two, the shares accumulate quickly — the first three exporters together account for 40.6 percent, the top five account for 61.4 percent and the top ten account for 80.5 percent, leaving fewer than one-fifth of reported tonnes to the remaining 77 countries. North America forms a major export block in 2024, with Canada and the United States together accounting for 47,350,885 tonnes, or 28.3 percent of the listed total. Europe has several major exporters in the 2024 data, with Ukraine, France, Romania, Germany and Poland all in the top ten, supported by Bulgaria (4,979,214 tonnes), Lithuania (3,595,656 tonnes), Hungary (3,571,271 tonnes), the Czech Republic (3,163,717 tonnes) and Latvia (2,625,650 tonnes). Australia was the largest Oceanian exporter in the 2024 listed data, with 19,678,652 tonnes. In South America, Argentina (6,647,031 tonnes) is followed at distance by Brazil (2,832,373 tonnes) and Paraguay (545,962 tonnes). In Asia, Kazakhstan (5,906,689 tonnes) is the largest exporter, while Türkiye ranks seventeenth with 1,685,507 tonnes. Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (77 countries with data in both years) rose from 166,287,809 tonnes to 167,386,289 tonnes, a change of 1,098,480 tonnes (0.7 percent). Ukraine added 4,513,115 tonnes (from 16,151,705 to 20,664,820 tonnes, up 27.9 percent), the United States added 3,861,547 tonnes (up 21.5 percent), Argentina added 3,802,435 tonnes (up 133.7 percent) and France added 1,588,952 tonnes (up 11.8 percent). Australia moved the other way, falling 9,613,386 tonnes (from 29,292,038 to 19,678,652 tonnes, down 32.8 percent), the largest single move in either direction and enough to offset about 69.8 percent of the four largest gains combined. Poland fell 1,923,568 tonnes (down 27.6 percent), Bulgaria 1,407,420 tonnes (down 22.0 percent), Kazakhstan 1,295,937 tonnes (down 18.0 percent), and the United Kingdom 999,168 tonnes (from 1,124,214 to 125,046 tonnes, down 88.9 percent). Across major exporters the year split in two directions: Ukraine, the United States, Argentina and France expanded together while Australia, Poland, Bulgaria and Kazakhstan contracted together. Smaller bases produced the sharpest percentage jumps, for example Spain rising from 103,167 to 439,998 tonnes (up 326.5 percent) and Paraguay from 247,038 to 545,962 tonnes (up 121.0 percent), whereas Serbia grew 83.7 percent on a larger base (from 674,901 to 1,239,465 tonnes). Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (76 countries with data in both years) rose from 160,327,617 tonnes to 167,338,836 tonnes, a change of 7,011,219 tonnes (4.4 percent). The totals listed for each year were 198,108,071 and 167,389,827 tonnes, looking like a 15.5 percent fall only because 27 countries reporting in 2020 (about 37.8 million tonnes, of which Russia alone reported 37,267,014) did not report in 2024. Australia recorded the largest increase over the period, rising 9,278,234 tonnes (from 10,400,418 to 19,678,652 tonnes, up 89.2 percent). Romania added 3,153,950 tonnes (up 73.3 percent), Ukraine 2,609,147 tonnes (up 14.5 percent) and Brazil 2,271,494 tonnes (from 560,879 to 2,832,373 tonnes, up 405.0 percent). Türkiye grew from 124,643 to 1,685,507 tonnes, an increase of 1,560,864 tonnes from a small base, alongside Moldova (up 844,313 tonnes) and Serbia (up 718,648 tonnes). The declines were led by France (down 4,726,982 tonnes, from 19,792,597 to 15,065,615 tonnes, minus 23.9 percent), the United States (down 4,327,707 tonnes, minus 16.6 percent), Argentina (down 3,549,900 tonnes, minus 34.8 percent) and Germany (down 2,240,533 tonnes, minus 24.2 percent). India fell from 928,684 to 72,048 tonnes (down 92.2 percent). Russia, which exported 37,267,014 tonnes in 2020 and 27,263,087 tonnes in 2021, has no reported quantity for 2022-2024 in this table, so it drops out of the recent ranking entirely; those empty cells mean not reported, not zero. The statistics come from the FAO Detailed Trade Matrix (export quantity and export value), aggregated to annual reporter totals for item Wheat. The table covers 2020-2024. Quantities are shown in tonnes as rounded display values (below 1,000 tonnes to two decimals, 1,000 tonnes and above as integers); values are shown in full US dollars and are in current dollars, not adjusted for inflation. Ranking and shares are computed on 2024 listed tonnes. A zero is a reported nil or negligible flow and an empty cell means no value was reported for that country and year; the two are never substituted for each other. Changes between two years are calculated only for countries with reported quantities in both years. Russia reports 2020-2021 but nothing for 2022-2024, which is why a historically large exporter is absent from the 2024 ranking. The FAOSTAT trade matrix is built from reported bilateral flows and may incorporate partner data where reported values are unavailable, as well as additions related to food aid. Bilateral flows are not fully reconciled, so reported exports and imports may differ between trading partners.Wheat Exports by Country in 2024

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a higher export value always mean a higher quantity?
Not necessarily. Quantity and export value can produce different rankings because export value also reflects the unit value of the reported trade. In 2023, Ukraine ranked above France by quantity (16,151,705 versus 13,476,663 tonnes), while France ranked above Ukraine by export value (3,962,763,000 versus 2,940,951,000 US dollars).
Why can an exporter disappear from a later year's ranking?
Because an empty cell means not reported, not zero. Russia reported 37,267,014 tonnes for 2020 and 27,263,087 tonnes for 2021 but has no reported quantity for 2022-2024, so it cannot be ranked for those years despite its much higher reported quantities in 2020 and 2021.
Why are the 2024 totals lower than some earlier years?
The listed total depends on which countries reported data in each year. Countries with no reported 2024 quantity are not treated as zero and do not contribute to the 2024 listed total.
Can this export ranking identify the largest wheat producer?
No. It records reported wheat exports by country in tonnes and US dollars, not production, domestic use, stocks or imports. A country can be a major producer without appearing at the top of an export ranking.
