Wheat Imports by Country
Wheat imports are spread across dozens of buyers: the largest importer holds just 8.1 percent of the reported total. Each observation pairs an import quantity in tonnes with an import value in US dollars. The figures aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix reporter totals for item Wheat over 2020-2024. The table lists 162 countries, of which 116 reported a 2024 quantity, and the listed 2024 quantities sum to about 161.9 million tonnes. Countries are ranked by 2024 quantity from largest to smallest.
Egypt was the largest wheat importer in the 2024 listed data with 13,095,852 tonnes, followed by Indonesia with 12,145,354 tonnes and China with 11,007,651 tonnes. Italy ranked fourth with 9,407,912 tonnes, ahead of Spain (7,861,109 tonnes), the Philippines (6,763,725 tonnes), Brazil (6,647,606 tonnes), Germany (6,095,918 tonnes), Türkiye (5,677,626 tonnes) and Japan (5,214,365 tonnes). Egypt also led on import value at 4,442,761,000 US dollars, ahead of Indonesia (3,634,612,000) and China (3,481,678,000). The buyer side is strikingly diffuse: the top three importers together hold only 22.4 percent of the listed 2024 total, the top five 33.1 percent and the top ten 51.8 percent — nearly half of reported imports sit outside the top ten. Egypt imported only about 1.08 times as much as Indonesia, so even the lead itself is narrow. Uzbekistan (4,922,040 tonnes), South Korea (4,594,080 tonnes), the Netherlands (4,583,669 tonnes), Mexico (4,277,847 tonnes) and Thailand (4,027,601 tonnes) all sit within a tight band just below the top ten threshold. Asia forms the largest regional bloc, with about 63.3 million tonnes across 25 listed countries, or 39.1 percent of the listed total — led by Indonesia, China, the Philippines, Japan and Uzbekistan. Europe follows with about 49.8 million tonnes across 38 listed countries, including Italy, Spain, Germany, Türkiye and the Netherlands. Africa (about 23.1 million tonnes, led by Egypt) and the Americas (about 23.1 million tonnes, led by Brazil and Mexico) each account for roughly one-seventh of the listed total. Between 2023 and 2024, the common reporter universe (113 countries with data in both years) rose from 151,939,464 tonnes to 160,758,876 tonnes, a change of 8,819,412 tonnes (5.8 percent). The totals listed for each year were 175,309,008 tonnes (148 reporters) and 161,888,264 tonnes (116 reporters); the apparent fall comes from 35 countries reporting in 2023 but not in 2024, accounting for about 23.4 million tonnes of the 2023 listed total — a composition effect, not a contraction. Within the common universe, Türkiye recorded by far the largest absolute decline, falling 6,226,995 tonnes (from 11,904,621 to 5,677,626 tonnes, down 52.3 percent), enough to offset about 70.6 percent of the common-universe gain. Spain fell 1,775,069 tonnes (down 18.4 percent), Kazakhstan 961,787 tonnes (down 36.8 percent) and China 870,091 tonnes (down 7.3 percent). Gains were led by Egypt, which added 4,933,815 tonnes (from 8,162,037 to 13,095,852 tonnes, up 60.4 percent), followed by Brazil with 2,466,779 tonnes (up 59.0 percent), the Philippines with 1,810,932 tonnes (up 36.6 percent) and Uzbekistan with 1,605,541 tonnes (up 48.4 percent). The United Kingdom grew 80.5 percent on a smaller base (from 1,708,291 to 3,083,825 tonnes). So the year combined a sharp contraction in Türkiye with strong expansion across Egypt, Brazil and Southeast Asia. Between 2020 and 2024, the common reporter universe (113 countries with data in both years) rose from 136,899,118 tonnes to 161,784,350 tonnes, a change of 24,885,232 tonnes (18.2 percent). The totals listed for each year were 163,354,571 and 161,888,264 tonnes, looking almost flat only because 38 countries reporting in 2020 (about 26.5 million tonnes) did not report in 2024. Egypt added 4,126,637 tonnes (up 46.0 percent), Spain 3,709,299 tonnes (up 89.3 percent), China 2,856,079 tonnes (up 35.0 percent) and Germany 2,096,550 tonnes (up 52.4 percent). Saudi Arabia rose 2,603,801 tonnes (from 773,405 to 3,377,206 tonnes, up 336.7 percent) from a small base, alongside Uzbekistan (up 2,122,419 tonnes, or 75.8 percent). The declines were led by Türkiye, down 3,981,560 tonnes (minus 41.2 percent). Australia all but disappeared as an importer, falling from 482,237 tonnes in 2020 to 36.02 tonnes in 2024 (down 100.0 percent) — consistent with its position as one of the largest exporters in the 2024 listed export data. Sri Lanka fell 393,253 tonnes (down 28.0 percent). A zero in this table is a reported nil flow and an empty cell means no value was reported; neither is substituted for the other. These statistics aggregate FAO Detailed Trade Matrix bilateral flows into annual reporter totals for item Wheat, covering import quantity and import value for 2020-2024. Quantities appear in tonnes as rounded display values (below 1,000 tonnes to two decimals, 1,000 tonnes and above as integers); values appear in full current US dollars and are not adjusted for inflation. Ranking and shares use 2024 listed tonnes. A reported zero denotes a nil or negligible flow, while an empty cell means nothing was reported for that country and year. Changes between two years are calculated only for countries with reported quantities in both years; countries missing a quantity in either year are excluded from the change calculation. The matrix is built from reported flows and may incorporate partner data where reports are missing, plus additions related to food aid; bilateral flows are not fully reconciled, so a flow reported as an export by one country may differ from the mirror import reported by its partner.Wheat Imports by Country in 2024

Methodology
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can two countries rank differently by quantity and import value?
Because import value reflects both quantity and the unit value of the reported trade, so the orders need not match. Spain imported more than the Philippines in 2024 (7,861,109 versus 6,763,725 tonnes) but paid less (1,943,036,000 versus 2,034,578,000 US dollars), reflecting different unit values in the reported trade.
Can a country's wheat imports fall to almost zero?
Yes, when trade patterns shift. Australia reported 482,237 tonnes of wheat imports in 2020 but only 36.02 tonnes in 2024 (down 100.0 percent). An empty cell would instead mean nothing was reported, which is different from a reported near-zero flow.
How should a surge like Saudi Arabia's be read?
Saudi Arabia's imports rose from 773,405 to 3,377,206 tonnes between 2020 and 2024, an increase of 2,603,801 tonnes or 336.7 percent. The percentage looks dramatic because the starting base was small; it should always be read alongside the absolute increase of about 2.6 million tonnes.
Can this import ranking identify national wheat consumption?
No. The table records reported imports, rather than production, domestic use, stocks or exports. Imports can contribute to supply, but they do not by themselves measure how much wheat a country consumes.
