About Congo
The Republic of the Congo, also called Congo-Brazzaville, is a Central African nation known for its vast tropical rainforests and significant oil reserves. The oil sector is the backbone of the economy, accounting for about half of the GDP and 80% of exports, making it the third-largest producer in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Over half of the nation's 6.1 million people live in the two main cities, Brazzaville (the capital) and Pointe-Noire. Brazzaville is uniquely situated on the Congo River, directly facing Kinshasa, the capital of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo, making them the world's closest pair of capital cities.
The country is home to one of the world's largest tropical peatlands, a vital ecosystem for climate regulation. Despite its natural wealth, the nation faces challenges in human capital development, with high infant mortality and lower-than-average educational proficiency. Governance has been stable under President Denis Sassou Nguesso, who has led the country for much of the period since 1979.
