Turkmenistan Statistics

Turkmenistan is a Central Asian country known for its vast natural gas reserves, desert landscapes, and distinctive cultural heritage. It borders Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Iran, while the Caspian Sea forms its western coastline. Much of the country is covered by the Karakum Desert, which gives Turkmenistan a predominantly dry and hot climate.

Ashgabat, the capital and largest city, is known for its impressive white-marble buildings, wide avenues, and monumental architecture. The country also has a long history connected to the Silk Road, with ancient sites such as Merv and Kunya-Urgench reflecting its importance as a historical crossroads between Central Asia and the Middle East.

Turkmenistan has a population of around 6.4 million people. Turkmen is the official language and is written using a Latin-based alphabet, which replaced Cyrillic after independence from the Soviet Union. The majority of the population is Muslim, with Sunni Islam being the predominant tradition.

Natural gas is central to the country's economy, and Turkmenistan possesses some of the world's largest natural gas reserves. Energy exports, particularly to China, play an important role in the country's international trade.

Turkmen culture has strong connections to Central Asian nomadic traditions. The Akhal-Teke horse is an important national symbol, while traditional carpet weaving is one of the country's best-known crafts. Turkmenistan is also home to the famous Darvaza Gas Crater, popularly called the "Door to Hell," a natural gas crater that has become one of the country's most recognizable landmarks.

Today, Turkmenistan remains one of the more isolated and tightly controlled countries in Central Asia, combining significant natural resources with a distinctive cultural and historical identity.
